Plump DJs: Summer Smother Mix

With the launch of Grand Hotel Records and a coveted Fabric residency, Plump DJs seem to be at the very top of their game. A DJ duo usually synonymous with breaks, the Plumpers are hardly complacent, something which Bonsai Kat’s stunning ‘Ego Tripping’ is testament to. As well as creating beats themselves, Plump DJs are now championing what they consider the best in new dance music. Maria Long is one who definitely trusts their taste – she caught up with them to find out what the view’s like up there.

Reading is always better accompanied by soundz. Go here to download Plump DJs’ Summer Smother mix now to pleasure your ears.

Notion: You now have residencies at two infamous super-clubs, how the fuck does that feel?

Plump DJs: We have been part of the fabric family for ten years now and for us we feel privileged to be a part of such a legendary establishment. The club draws worldwide attention and people are queuing religiously to get in and get down, the sound system is awesome and the energy still ‘dark disco’.

Notion:  What motivated you to start Grand Hotel Records, and where do you want to go with it, ideally?

Plump DJs: We finished our 10 year contact with Finger Lickin and wanted a new challenge. The label will provide a platform for us to nurture new talent and also provide us with a fresh avenue to push our sound.

Notion: Tell us about ‘Plumpers’, the top shelf girl’s mag where you apparently sourced your name.

Plump DJs:  It’s a magazine for those people out there that appreciate the female form XXXL. We discovered the magazine and liked its attitude, so too did we fall in love with the descriptive ‘plump’ and the rest is history.

Notion:  Have you got any interesting projects lined up that Planet Notion readers should get excited about?

Plump DJs:  Forthcoming on Grand Hotel ‘Boomer’ and ‘Water Born Computer Virus’ singles  from us. Plus our SUMMER SOOTHER mix for 2010. We will be touring the US, Canada and Australia this year, also hitting SPACE/EDEN in Ibiza, SHAMBHALA festival CAN too name a few tour destinations.

Notion:  It’s festival season, do you approach a festival set differently, if at all?

Plump DJs:  We approach with wellington boots on our feet and brandy in our hip flask.

Notion: Are there any new acts that you’re championing, other than those affiliated with Grand Hotel?

Plump DJs: Check our SUMMER SOOTHER mix for an idea of where we are coming from and who we are getting behind, it will take your head off!

Notion: Grand Hotel’s second release, Bonsai Kat’s ‘Ego Tripping’, in my opinion is absolutely golden, how rewarding is it to be in the position to expose new talent?

Plump DJs:  That tune really hits the nail on the head, this sound is really motivating us at present. ..a kind of ‘electro rock’.

Notion:  And finally…tell us about the evolution of your sound, and where you want to be, as producers, in the near future?

Plump DJs:  We spend every day below ground in our Soho sound lab, and then we are away most weekend road testing new tracks. We keep experimenting, ‘finding new ways to make them dance’. It makes us happy. We are sticking to dance floor music at present and experimenting with new ideas. Our sound has come a long way in 13 years of discovery and expression. From the disco funk driven sounds of THE PUSH and ELECTRIC DISCO, breaks bombs BULLET TRAIN and REMEMBER MY NAME, to the technoid exploding SCRAM and acid music ACID HUSTLE. We must create, and we will continue. Happy Days.
