On the Prowl: Trainers for the art crowd

From Andy Warhol tea towels to Roy Liechtenstein ashtrays, the influence of pop art has come full circle – the objects that were parodied and recreated by the ’60s and ’70s avantgarde artists are now sold everywhere, putting that style of art into homes across the world, and making it genuinely ‘popular’. Footwear’s in on the game too. Puma’s glorious Houston takes Liechtenstein-esque comic-book influences and heavy outlines on logo detailing and blends it with a classic ’90s sneaker design. The 917 Houston’s come in a refreshingly muted palette of shades, faded but still vibrant, like your old copies of the Beano and with stripe-edged laces which complete the look. Who knows, maybe in a few decades these kicks will attain the same cult status as Andy’s Brillo boxes? Either way, they’re much comfier to wear down the pub.
