With the exception of Cut Off your Hands, in my opinion “Kiwi-rock” has lacked many high- calibre exports since The Clean. Since emerging in 2003, Die! Die! Die! have looked set to be New Zealand’s primary defense against claims such as mine.
Recording their first self-titled album with the legendary Steve Albini at Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago in 2006, and having toured with such amazing bands as Slint, The Pixies, and Blood Brothers, there’s definitely something wrong when Die! Die! Die!’s brand of angular post-punk is not the only source of audio pummeling the eardrums of anyone who loves their guitars loud and their band ethos punk-infused.
Their newest release, ‘FORM’, may be the album which provides the band with not only the true realisation of their musical intentions, but also the exposure that they deserve among us folks so far away in the UK.
We have a free download and video for the track track ‘HowYe’- a favourite during the band’s live shows- from the album ‘FORM’, for your listening pleasure. At first it sounds a bit like Maccabees-with-a-bee-in-their-bonnet as a result of its angular guitar sensibility, then it all turns a lot darker, with distorted bass and barely comprehensible No Age styled slurred vocals. Enjoy it, and most certainly play it loud. You will not have made a better decision this week.
