LFW: Amanda Wakeley

We scored a last-minute ticket to Amanda Wakeley’s show at Somerset House and managed to dash in just as the doors closed on the way back from Fashion East. To be honest, we weren’t expecting great things, and the crowd said it all: middle-aged. The collection was pleasant; beautifully-tailored long coats, belted with a double-wraparound fastening in complimentary brown leather, neatly-panelled short dresses and some luxe separates in safe palettes, with a shot of orange. Red carpet silk dresses, floating sleeveless shifts and oodles of fur upped the glamour quotient, and the collection nodded to the leather and sheer trends in a commercial way.
Separates were more directional, but the overall feel was of a glam older lady at a charity benefit. It’s not a bad thing, but for me Wakeley’s clothes sit somewhere in what I’m terming the Samantha Zone: somewhere between the ubiquitous Samantha Cameron (she’s ALL OVER LFW this season) and Samantha from SATC.
