Girl power: An interview with StooShe

Brought together by creative director Jo Perry, this South-East London trio are a sh*tload more than your generic girl-pop-group – although it’s hard not to be reminded of the Spice Girls – and they’re definitely brimming with talent. With their filthy lyrics and playful banter, their first video for unreleased track “F**k Me” turns the most innocent nursery rhyme into a raunchy sentiment (hey diddle diddle, my cat needs a fiddle), and has been dubbed an “X-rated En Vogue”. They inject a confident, crude charm into their songs which burst with Motown-soul-infused beats and a polished roughness. Their ballsy attitude (on top of the most vibrant wardrobe I’ve ever seen in my life) suggests they’re definitely not a group for the light-hearted… or anyone who doesn’t know how to have fun.

PlanetNotion: Where did the name come from?

Alexandra: Our music mum (Jo Perry) thought of the idea; I didn’t like it at first, but I love it now. I think it’s perfect for us.
Karis: I loved it from the moment I heard it; I love the fact it’s got different meanings.
Courtney: I’m with Al (laughs) – I hated it, but now I can’t imagine being called anything else.

PN: You’ve all come from musical backgrounds; did you ever consider being in a group, or were you mainly interested in pursuing a solo career?

Karis: I grew up with girl bands being the thing that was ‘cool’. At the time it wasn’t so much about being a solo artist like it is now, I just always wanted to be a Spice Girl (laughs)! It’s a more secure feeling for me, being in a group, and I think we all bring out the best in each other.
Courtney: I went to a theatre school from a young age, so I was always singing and dancing with groups, and like Karis said we grew up with wicked girl bands. So just to pursue a career in the performing world with such a sick group is something!!!
Alexendra: I actually never thought I would even be a singer… but here I am. My mum is a singer and she taught me the basics, and I love that I’m in a girl band with these guys. I wouldn’t even think about going solo- it’s too much fun doing it with them.

PN: You all have really strong personalities; does that ever cause any problems in the group?

Alexandra: All of us bring different things to the StooShe family which makes us work well together.
Karis: We’ve definitely all got strong personalities, but I think ‘cause they’re all so different we all blend together and make the perfect StooShe combo!
Courtney: (sings) ‘cause we are sisters – we stick together! Na, we gots a strong StooShe fam going on.

PN: When you’re taking a break from recording, what do you enjoy doing?

Karis: Sleeping! (laughs) Apart from that I love spending time with my family.
Alex: Yeah, same. I’ve got a big family so spending time with them… and eating! I love to eat!
Courtney: Chilling! Spending time with me peoples or painting; I like to paint!!

PN: You’ve written about some very.. interesting topics. What inspires you when begin the writing process?

Courtney: Everyday life!!!! We say what people are afraid to. Life, our lives and others are the inspiration!!!
Karis: NO RULES!!! That’s our only rule and I think that’s the main thing. But we take inspiration from everything.

PN: What kind of sound are you trying to create?

Alexandra: Something new and different that we hope people have not heard.
Karis: Umm… We’re not trying to create any kind of sound in particular, we just have fun with no rules and StooShe is the outcome.
Courtney: A StooShe sound!

PN: You can’t help but remind us all of the 90s (the good parts) – are there any musicians from this era that have inspired you, or have you drawn on more modern influences?

Karis + Alexandra: BEYONCE, TLC, we love Frank Ocean right now… too many to mention!
Courtney: Ahh I’m with the girls – good old Honey B. Everything from that to The Beatles. Our tastes are so eclectic.

PN: Where do you hope to be in a few years’ time?

Courtney: With StooShe takin’ over the world…!
Alex: I want to see our faces EVERYWHERE and people joining in with StooShe fun!
Karis: Hmmm… A sold out world tour would be nice! Not setting our standards high or anything…(laughs)

PN: Any upcoming gigs?

StooShe: Yep! Keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter for all of our gigs and more info.

PN: When do you intend to release your album and what can we expect?

StooShe: We’re going to be releasing some more StooShe-ness in August. Our album is nearly ready, and we are so excited for everyone to hear it!

Clearly these girls aren’t afraid to write about what they want, make music how they want, dress like they want, and act the way they want. And that alone is extraordinary.
Their debut single, a daring reinvention of the notorious “Here comes the Hotstepper” by Ini Kamoze, is released on August 15th.
