EP Review: Joe Goddard – Gabriel

Adding solo artist to writer and producer behind Hot Chip, travel some DJ and prolific remixer, it would seem that the studio of Joe Goddard (Greco-Roman/DFA Records) has been a busy one.

His latest EP, which apparently materialised in the comfort of his bedroom, is a beautiful collection of tracks that are all about the vocals. Hugely infectious, it’s sweet electronica that worms its way into your memory, albeit the main thing you’ll remember is Valentina crying out “Gaaaaaaaaaaaabriel!” at the top of her lungs. But that’s a good thing.

“Jump” is a refreshing burst of energy that mirrors the sound of Hot Chip with its underlying groove; having said that, there’s a much more rhythmic blend of house and disco that makes you want to, well, jump. Thus the EP ends with a final burst of energy for those of you who don’t want the party to stop. The acid-club version of “Gabriel” corrodes and infects your mind. That’s the way you like it though, isn’t it?

The EP is out now.
