Single Review: Adalita – The Repairer
Adalita, the front woman of Magic Dirt, has almost reinvented herself with her debut solo single. However, The Repairer hasn’t lost the angst and upfront emotion for which her song writing has become renowned, indeed respected for.
The title track is fuelled by a relentless rhythm that is almost haunting, and by the three minute mark there’s a very dim reminder of Sinead O’Connor’s heart-wrenching ballad “Nothing Compares to You” as her vocals peak with such powerful force they generate an unnerving, psychedelic echo. The second track, Hot Air, is an equally sultry, guitar ballad whose distorted, repetitive guitar is almost smothering “with no release”.
There are faint undertones of Magic Dirt on the single, simply starved of the instrumentation; The Repairer is Adalita laid bare. That isn’t to say that it is lacking in any way – on the contrary. Her heartfelt song writing can take centre stage, complimented by her adept guitar chords which neither overpower nor drown under her striking vocals.
The Repairer is released on Monday September 5th.
