LFW: Jacob Kimmie – Interview

The ever so exciting Jacob Kimmie SS12 show featured an almost entirely monochromatic collection that got us all in a delightful fashion flurry. With relaxed silhouettes and floaty, mostly sheer dresses, Jacob’s encapsulated a profoundly feminine and romantic theme this season. His show was somewhat of a theatrical masterpiece and afterwards we were lucky enough to speak to the man himself.

Planet Notion: Can you talk us through your collection, what is it all about?

Jacob Kimmie: This season we wanted to keep things really light. We had so many requests from people asking for what we do but in wearable versions. That was the whole idea behind it all really. Also in a world that’s always changing I look towards spirituality. So this collection is like a modern take on spirituality and looking at Baroque art.

PN: You can see that in the collection. Your use of dark colours is striking but it’s still so light and beautiful.

PN: How do you find your inspiration?

JK: For me, it’s really a mood; I usually find a mood in music. This season a lot came from Mozart. It just felt so relevant, even though the music used in the show was Bach. A lot of draping was used too so it’s got a really overtly romantic quality, which is what I wanted also with the hair and makeup. I just wanted it all to be beautiful.

PN: Do your ideas just come to you? How do they form?

JK: That’s a very difficult question to answer – it’s yes and no. It’s sort of a mood that comes first. I like to capture the mood of the time.

PN: Is this the kind of direction you want to keep going in?

JK: Oh god no, it’s all about change! All of you people demanding change! It’s still got to be in keeping with something we’ve started. It’s not religion, I think it just questions the way we look.
