Preview: London Tattoos By Alex MacNaughton
These electrifying portraits by acclaimed photographer Alex MacNaughton prove in the most eloquent way that tattoos are more than skin deep. Fascinated by the ways body art reflects an individual’s personality, for his new book MacNaughton set out to find people whose ornate tattoos tell a story.
The result is a wonderfully dynamic collection of portraits that uniquely celebrates the art of tattooing. Each individual is introduced through a detailed full-body, full-page photograph, showcasing the fashion and style which complement the body art.
On October 20th Red Bull Studios in London played host to the launch of London Tattoos. Guests were welcomed with a cold can of Pistonhead Lager, making its UK debut from Sweden with its tattoo inspired branding and everyone’s favourite Sailor Jerry Rum was flowing nicely alongside Redbull Cola. Inside the music was an eclectic mix of cult classics spun by Shane McPherson of Pimps Don’t Cry.
Blown up extracts from the book were displayed on the walls, while The Circle tattoo studio provided a ‘live tattooing presentation’ in which one very brave chap had a lotus flower tattooed on his palm. Rum Knuckles Clothing showcased their AW11 collection and also gave away t-shirts in the event goodie bags alongside another of MacNaughton’s books, London Street Art, tattoo healing creams from After Inked and Don’t Panic flyer packs.
Finally the night came to a close with a toast from the author followed by a rapturous cheer as the Patron XO tequila shots were served. If you’re equally enamoured by these images then the book is available now and can be purchased through Amazon.
