Mixtape: Marques Toliver – ‘Studying For My Ph.D’

If your music taste is anything like Marques Toliver’s, in the impossible way that it can be confined to one genre, then you’re in for a treat this afternoon. Pushing the boundaries of the mixtape’s capabilities, Marques combines Roberta Flack’s ‘I am the Girl’ along with ‘Keep it Between Us’ from Kelly Rowland, sprinkled with a generous pinch of Beyoncé’s ‘Baby Boy’, oh and streams of a choir – and that’s just the first track.

As an ode to how he’s progressed as an artist and his musical heritage, Marques also extracts samples from Bon Iver, Shuggie Ottis, Bach and hip-hop producer MADLIB, as well as recordings of interviews with Eartha Kitt and Little Richard. Indeed there’s enough beautifully layered chaos to cause tectonic plates to jolt so be sure to stream this beast at exponentially high decibels.

Marques’ debut album is released on Bella Union next year, so watch this space for more musical marvels from Marques.
