BOTW Interview & Exclusive Download: Birdy Nam Nam
As y’all know by now, Birdy Nam Nam are our BOTW. We spoke to one quarter of the troupe, Little Mike, about DJing, electronic music, all sorts. You can read what we said below. You may find it quite interesting. Plus, if you get to the end of the interview you will find an ex-to-the-lusive download of their single ‘Goin’ In (Noob Remix)’. Can’t say we don’t spoil yous.
You’ve been around for years and years now. How have you seen electronic music change over the past decade?
Music is always evolving but I think the most important change was to see some barriers fall down. Ten years ago DJs had to play hip hop or electronic music; today, people are not limited to one kind of music – the electronic music scene got really huge lately, with “star” DJs and crazy audiences. It’s the new rock & roll, but there are also less drugs (sometimes)!
How did each of you get into DJing?
We all pretty much came from the hip hop/scratch scene…but this is way too long to explain properly.
How does the music scene in France compare to the one in England?
Less bassy, grooveless… just kidding. I think the biggest difference is how English producers are using Jamaican and black music as an inspiration, there’s a more tropical vibe in England.
You’ve played all around the world – which country has reacted to your music best? Where’s been your favourite place to play?
Unfortunately, in France ’cause it’s where we are most known, but actually everywhere we go we find the people respond very positively to our music.
How do you translate your recordings to a live setting?
In fact we try to create new versions of the tracks and even new songs, but the main idea is to tell a story, to take people on a journey to reach a certain climax.
Old school analogue, or new school digital?
A mix of both.
The last five pieces of music you put on your iPod?
- Rick Ross feat. Drake – ‘I’m On One’
- Strange Clouds feat. Lil’Wayne – ‘B.O.B.’
- Big Sean ‘I Do It’
- Birdman feat. Nicki Minaj and Lil’Wayne – ‘Y U mad’
- Para One – ‘Mother’
What’s your favourite thing to do in your spare time, when you’re not recording or playing live?
I make music by myself, I spend time with my kid and I support my team PSG!
Which new artists do you predict will do great things in 2012?
I’ve heard some crazy tracks from Para One who is finishing his album. Probably Club Cheval too – those guys are so talented; and also Gesaffelstein who is working on an album, my man Jackson (and his computer band) is coming out soon with his album too which is going to be wicked.
What are your plans for 2012?
Play as much as we can with Birdy Nam Nam, try to work with MCs on a hip hop project, take care of my kid.
