Fave Fives of the Week – New Year edition

My first Fave Fives of the year! Can I say a very happy 2012 to you all. It’s going to be great because we are going to make it so – right? I am choosing to ignore the doom and gloom merchants and the end of the world prophecies. Twenty-twelve has begun with such gusto. This edition features the Smile for London exhibition, Milan menswear fashion week featuring Dolce & Gabbana and their ‘La Bella Estate’ party and most importantly my new Boudoir lashes and more… Read on all will be revealed in this New Year edition of Fave Fives….

1. Boudoir Lashes – South Kensington, London

Asma Docrat of Boudoir Lashes was the force behind my glam prep for Milan. Her studio is based in BECCA cosmetics flagship store in South Kensington. Asma is a fully qualified beauty therapist in nearly all aspects of beauty and has honed her expertise into lash extensions. This young lady launched officially in October 2011 and has already gained a cult following. As she prepared me for my ‘volume’ lash service, she turned and said “Right, we are not doing drag queen – we are doing pretty!” I giggled and became totally at ease as her creative hands went to work. In the two hours of the treatment, I feel asleep and woke up with the exact precise pattern of my own lashes – just a longer voluminous and natural looking – I was stunned at the result. The workmanship is astounding and lasts 6-8 weeks. I was now ready to take on Milan.

2. Dolce & Gabbana FW12/13 Menswear show – Milan, Italy
Milan Fashion Week in January is the men’s turn to shine in space where we women dominate. This was the only show I was invited so how could I say no. Plus it was a great opportunity to meet more of the Swide team. The show was at the Metropol – I scanned the front row below and saw David Gandy and wondered why he wasn’t walking. One of the Queens of fashion Anna Dello Russo was there looking pretty low-key stylewise – but resplendent still. The show began as the hot young male models of all ethnicities stormed the catwalk in looks what I can best described as modern day ‘Adam Ant’ or ‘New Age muskateer’. Velvets, gold brocade, capes, and details and texture were key in this collection. The coats were the most wearable on a broad scale. Here are a few pictures….

3. “La Bella Estate” screening and private party – Milan, Italy

This party was held at the Dolce & Gabbana menswear concept store on Corso Venezia – a decadent space with a beautiful bar and garden. As you can imagine it was filled with “really really good looking” (mainly) men and women. Wall to wall celebs and it was good to see Tinie Tempah in the house.

The theme was Italian cinema and the chic majority were dressed in black. The comedic short film starring A-list Italian actors was continuously screened throughout the evening. I am very proud to say the concept of the film came from the Swide team headed by Giuliano Federico. See it here.

I can sum up this trip with two words: love and laughter– my experience from start to end; from the lady in the local bakery who kept giving me her focaccias and hazelnut cookies for free! And the hospitality shown to me by the Swide/Dolce & Gabbana team. To the bellyache laughter and fun shared with fellow industry friends from London – I had a ball.

4. Glossy Box

This clever concept is for the beauty-curious woman and man. For £10 a month you get sent a surprise selection of products: make up, hair and skincare etc in sizes that can be used long enough to deduce whether they actually work for you or not before you go ahead and buy the full size version. My box was delivered just in time to take with me to Milan. I love the fact that you can travel with them in your hand luggage without the worry of it all being seized by the ‘product police’ at the airport. The quality brands you’ll receive will be brands such as NARS, Leighton Denny, Blink +go and Murad to name a few. This is a really useful way to budget on your product spend without neglecting your beauty regimen.

5. Smile for London launch – XOYO, Old Street, London

My friend Valeria and I weren’t quite sure what to expect even though we had read the release – you never know sometimes, but this launch party was immensely entertaining as a group of London’s finest poets recited their (life) poetry. It was thought provoking, funny and ironic, the poets were a brilliant mix – just like London. The party gave the guests a preview of Word in Motion; from January 16th if you travel on the tube during rush hours (7am-10am and 4pm-7pm) you’ll be inspired by Smile for London’s exhibition of poetry and animations on digital screens at 60 major stations. The aim; to help you beat the January blues by warming up your cold day with something to make you smile…This exhibition will run until the end of January – it’s brilliant!

To end on another happy note. I now have a new regular column on Swide called Luxury London. Along with my Fave Fives on Planet Notion please follow me on my escapades and discoveries. Thank you for your support in 2011 and hang in there with me for 2012 – I appreciate it – always.

Until next time,

Stay happy, stay karma.
