MIA has a new video. It’s pretty rad. It’s set in the Middle East, but not for MIA any political commentary this time. It’s more like a car park in Luton on a Saturday night transplanted into the desert. But think ye not of will.i.am’s odious video/smartphone commercial for T.H.E., this is a load of kids having a bloody good time. Dancing sheikhs, maximum hoonage (as I believe the phrase is to describe these things) and Beemers make up the backdrop for MIA’s latest opus, and it’s bloody brilliant. Check the moment that she’s filing her nails on top of a BMW on two wheels. The song too – sure to be all over the clubs; it’s got that great Middle Eastern fluteline over a killer bass. Just another reason why we love M.I.A.
“It was dope to have so many people from so many different backgrounds speaking so many different languages come together to create something that we believed in,” says M.I.A about the video. “I thought I was gonna die on the shoot when I saw the drifting. It was a four day shoot so everyone was on edge the whole time specifically ME when I had to do bluesteel singing to the camera while the cars did doughnuts on the wet road ten feet away. In my mind I was thinking how I was gonna deliver the video to Vice with no legs.”
