LFW Interview: Alice Lee

Drawing inspiration from sources as dark and romantic as Dante, Rackham and Aubrey Beardsly, the beauty of Alice Lee’s AW12 offering was in the seemingly effortless, minimal aesthetic. Sculptured knits in the most feminine of silhouettes were strutted down the runway, but what really gave each piece their dark and daring edge were the hand-stiched leather weaves snaking their way over shoulders and curving down backs. Backstage, Alice Smith, one half of the husband and wife design duo, spared a few precious minutes to have a wee chat.

Planet Notion: The show went really well!

Alice Smith: Yes, I’m really pleased and we’ve all been working flat out to get it done. A little relieved as well, but really happy with it and I’m really happy with how it came together becasue you can’t always see the clothes until they are on the girls, so that’s when you really formalise your look and bring it together.

PN: You had quite a simple aesthetic, but all the detailing made each piece so interesting and just gave it that edge.

AS: Well what we really like to do is embellish the fabric, and so keep the base quite simple. And there’s just a love of handwork so the leather is hand-stitched all the way through. I mean next season it might be something completely different, next season it might be more about the shapes than the fabric embellishments, but I come from a textile background so I always feel very inspired by the fabric.

PN: And the collection as a whole, where did the inspiration for that come from?

AS: Well it came from Aubrey Beardsly paintings and some Arthur Miller illustrations, but very early illustrations. Not literally though, more like you look at them and get a feeling from them and ideas from there. And also a poem by Dante called ‘Sudden Light.’ But we wanted to have a very modern feel to it and so that’s why we kept it quite minimal really, but bringing new things in. Although I guess the leather makes it quite old, it sort of has that look I suppose.

PN: What sort of woman do you imagine wearing these designs?

AS: Well she’s got to be strong and confident, she got to be her own person and not really following trends. She could also be any age as well, you know, we’ve had older ladies and younger girls wearing our clothes, so we’re not rigid on one sort of age group.

PN: What are you planning to do after Fashion Week?

AS: A good sleep! We’ve got two children so spending more time with them, before moving onto the next one. I’d also really like to work with some other people, it would be good to do a few collaborations.
