LFW: David Koma

The Georgian designer’s catwalk show is one of the BFC/NEWGEN iniative’s jewels in the crown. Season on season, he delivers sophisticated, elegant womenswear that mixes his roots with cutting-edge design, and of course, this season was no exception. Koma’s eye was drawn to Deco for AW12, and he put this to excellent use through height-enhancing column dresses and cigarette pants, as well as some of the most fabulous dresses we’ve seen this season. Initially in monochrome, later in berry tones, Koma’s dresses are expertly fitted to a woman’s curves, hugging in all the right places. To my mind, they recalled classic air hostess uniforms – I’m saying ’50s BOAC rather than easyJet, obvs – and were complemented by high, shirt-like collars that appeared in *squeal* glitter! The rubberised dresses and chromed, oval-shape cutouts combined with the high collars lent an air of bondage and danger; always nice to see a designer take on edgy and win. Oversized peplums and some SERIOUS sequin action completed a collection which was superchic to the next lev.
