Futureboogie Takeover: Crackazat Interview & MPFree

Introduce yourself in less than 140 characters.
I’m a producer, composer and musician. I grew up in Bristol. I moved to London in 2007 to study jazz at university, and after graduating I moved to Sweden. Now I teach, play and compose electronic and acoustic music.

Bristol has been a massive source for great upcoming innovative dance music over the past few years. Why do you think that is?
For me, Bristol has always been a source of innovative and creative electronic music. Recently, a new generation of producers, who have absorbed all the musical experiences you get when you grow up in Bristol, are now finding a platform to develop and distribute their music.

What is it about Futureboogie that sets it apart from other dance labels?
It’s a fantastic source for Bristol dance music!

In your opinion who has been the great pioneers in UK dance and how have they affected the way you make music?
I love Massive Attack, IG culture, Aphex Twin, Wagon Christ, Lemon Jelly and Burial, for their textures and creativity.

What makes British dance music different to that of, say, Chicago, New York or Berlin?
We have our own history and cultures, and that comes through in our music. Things happen fast here because everything is so small and close together. You just have to think about genres like Dubstep, Jungle, DnB, 2step, Trip hop, Acid Jazz to get an idea.

I think festivals have overtaken club nights in terms of popularity. Would you agree? How have you seen the club scene change over the past ten years?
Yes definitely. The club scene is more eclectic, dynamic and accessible now than it was ten years ago.

Are you a purist when it comes to DJing? Is using iPods or CDs cheating?
I’m primarily interested in what you play rather than how you play it, and iPods and CD decks are a great way to spread and play music that hasn’t had a vinyl release.

Do you solely play the music that you love or do you cater more to the crowd’s tastes depending on which context you’re in?
I play what I love, for the crowd.

What have you got planned for 2012?
Lots of releases and some great live sets!
