London In Stereo Presents… Gigs Of The Week #4

We are back from The Great Escape and we are musically satiated. Planet Notion saw around ten bands, which we reckon is pretty good going for one person, one day’s commuting to the coast in the soaking rain, one day drinking 7.8% cider and one day being hungover. O_o. The music definitely saved the weekend, and we’ll be giving our full report on our time in Brighton very soon. One great fallout of The Great Escape is that the bands that don’t reside in the UK usually arrive a few days early and leave a while after the festival has ended in order to give non TGE-goers a taster of the live show. Examples include some of our fave international acts like Perfume Genius, EMA, Haim, Niki & The Dove and DZ Deathrays – all of which are playing gigs this week, just an hour’s train ride up from Brighton back at home in The Big Smoke. More deets on the next seven days in live shows below, all courtesy of our friends at London In Stereo

London In Stereo’s Gigs Of The Week

Mystery Jets // Slow Club // Theme Park // Peace – Brixton Academy – Friday 18th May
Now, I am NOT a fan of Brixton Academy, not one bit, and I know there are some of you out there who love it. There is something I find so distinctly abhorrent about it that means I will avoid it at almost all costs. However, this here is a gig that would get me to go there. There is no pretentiousness about this, it’s just a showcase of brilliant pop music. And I love brilliant pop music more than I hate Brixton Academy.

EMA – Scala – Tuesday 15th May
EMA is back on form and sounding incredible live, so if you were disappointed by her last London show I suggest you give her another chance. Heartfelt and thoroughly entertaining, it’s difficult not to just enjoy her shows.

Icona Pop // Dante // Zebra + Snake – Electricity Showrooms – Tuesday 15th May
More brilliant pop music, mostly of the Swedish persuasion, to entertain you this week. Dante is a member of The Concretes, but don’t let that fool you – his solo tracks are upbeat, fun and technically brilliant. A perfect antidote to the rain.
