Club Beat #54: REVIEW: Toolroom Knights Ibiza 2012 Mixed By Mark Knight

It’s nearly here: ‘Toolroom Knights Ibiza 2012 Mixed By Mark Knight’ is released this Sunday. Mark Knight’s two-disc compilation takes us from our living rooms to the beach bars to la terraza at Space Ibiza and back again. It is a celebration of the white isle, of the Toolroom Knights residency at Space, of the talent on the label and in the scene in general and of the fans who support that scene.

We start our pre-club listening with El Salon. The mix begins gently with Karol XVII & MB Valence’s remix of Hanna’s Sometimes, Ajazmir’s vocals drawing us in and setting the tone. Later, Wehbba & Antonio Eudi’s The Real Thing winds in, the bass driving the mix forward. DJ Chus’ Iberican mix of Franky Rizardo’s Caracoles introduces a more exotic tone. This Latin house track, heavy on the percussion with interjections of pan pipes, is a fiesta all in itself. The holiday vibe continues with Ferreck Dawn & Redondo’s Miami edit of Kaduna, which fans will recognise from Toolroom Records Club Tools Volume 3, released earlier this year. This track transports us to a beach bar at sunset, with its ethnic sounds and hypnotic vocal play. This is followed by the tribal rhythms of Allen Craig’s Let The Drums Breath. Chus & Ceballos’ slick rework of Sister Sledge’s Lost in Music signals nightfall, as the crowds swell inside the bars. Touted as both a tribute and an invitation to get on the dancefloor, Cevin Fisher’s vocals compliment those of the original perfectly, sending out the same message: ‘we’re lost in music…but we don’t wanna be found’. Listening through this mix, we can’t fail to mention Rene Amesz & Ruell’s Work This with its twisted vocal snippets and unforgettable drop; it is pure energy. Mark Knight concludes this mix with his homage to classic house, Alright, taken from his Bullets 2 EP. Those who attended this year’s Global Gathering will remember this track ushering in a sea of TUNE cards. El Salon gently and steadily prepares us for our night out. After listening to this, we’re definitely ready to hit la terraza.

The La Terraza mix takes us through a Toolroom Knights event at Space. Boris Ross & Jeff Moore’s Golden Dreams builds anticipation. Aptly, the spoken word diva sample of Technasia’s Heart of Flesh interrupts this, forcing the volume on our stereo up. The repetitive, effects-laden keyboard in Mihalis Safras & Siwell’s Method Man drives the mix forward. Mihalis Safras has been hitting our radar since late last year, releasing quality tunes like Bankrupt, Briscok and his remix of Fantastique, and this one is no different: another winner. La Terraza really kicks off with the galloping percussion and big build ups of DJ Chus & D-Unity’s Burn in Hell, thankfully not nearly as aggressive as its title would suggest! Will Gold’s Everyone Everywhere is a peak-time dancefloor destroyer, which leads into Ahmet Sendil’s mix of Tocadisco, Koen Groeneveld and his track, Oldschool. This is a highly addictive track that you just need to dance to; we’d expect nothing less from these heavyweights. Adrian Hour, a new name to us, follows this with Shoot To Thrill, a hot new tune with a rolling base and massive build ups. The second track from Mark Knight’s recent EP, Together, signals a hug your friends moment with the words, ‘…and we survive together’. Later, Nicole Moudaber’s remix of Front Pocket pushes the night to a new level. The undisputed leading lady of techno uses vocal snippets and a killer bass to create a track that has remained popular on dancefloors for months. Finally, the mix is wound down with Cari Golden’s vocals on Pan-Pot’s Captain My Captain. And as the sun rises and Space closes, another night on the island comes to an end.

Toolroom Knights Ibiza 2012 Mixed By Mark Knight is ‘a journey through the world’s finest house music’. It brings together producers, sounds and styles from all over the world all in one compilation in one location: Ibiza. And in much the same way, fans travel from every corner of every country to join the Toolroom Knights crew on la terraza at Space. This is essential summer listening brought to you by the main man himself, Mark Knight.
