LFW SS13 Interview: Dans La Vie

Our first FROW of the season had us eagle-eyed as Rira Sugawara’s fourth collection paraded before us. Drawing on the Japanese Gods of Dragon, Thunder and Wind, ‘Moving Print Bodies’ saw Rira do what she does best , pairing kitschy and manipulated checkerboard prints with oriental silhouettes to unveil the next chapter in her designer journey. It was high shine throughout as PVC and python skin, with a hint of tulle, rendered in traditional Oriental structures (dramatic peplums contrasted the more feminine and floaty kimono shapes), were the textures of choice. Annexed between the paint pot blues, greens and oranges came the nude and printed sheath body suits.

Rira let us shove a Dictaphone in front of her, this is what happened..

Planet Notion: Well done on another great show, how d’you feel it went?
Rira Sugawara: I love this collection. I used many elements, for example, I made the dresses out of many different parts, it was very difficult. I actually honestly don’t know what the audience or the buyers thought. What did you think?

PN: It was fab, I was especially a fan of the python skin. I think it is difficult to gauge the reaction when you’re backstage and can’t see anything. What drew you to the initial inspiration points of the three gods?
RS: The three gods are a traditional motif of Japan. I didn’t want to express something from my mind or what I felt but I wanted to use something more typical and common sense.

PN: Last but not least, who do you design the clothes for? What type of woman?
RS: I want women who wear my clothes to push the boundaries of beauty, collage and love.
