LFW SS13 Interview: Holly Fulton

Sun-bleached is the best way I can think of describing Holly Fulton’s SS13 show. With candy colours, messy hair, flat shoes and straw hats this collection was all about laid-back relaxed luxe. Inspired by LA and Mexican beaches – plus ’60s skateboarder Peggy McGee – the pastel colours were brought to life with multimedia textures and patterns. This was the ultimate American summer vibe.

PN: So, Mexico and LA road trip was the theme this season- was this a trip you took yourself?
HF: Yes. I went to LA for the first time in March and the optimism there really inspired me. All the candy colours and the multi media came from there. I also tried to not use any black in the colour palette. It’s quite relaxed with the flats, and easy to wear pieces like the hats…

PN: So quite everyday wear pieces within the more editorial looks?
HF: Absolutely. Most aren’t you everyday wear but I like combining the two!

PN: Now obviously you’re famous for your prints, how do you manage to reinvent them every season?
HF: I think for me living and working in London is such an inspiration, there is so much around me to be inspired by! I’m quite a hoarder so there’s even more things around me at home and at work where I take my inspiration from. It all filters into the collection, and it definitely inspired the multimedia this season.

PN: And your accessories – like the one you’re wearing now – seem to be more and more part of the show every season, do you see this growing more in the future?
HF: I love trying to create as much of a total look as possible, and having the accessories alongside the clothes seems natural for me – it’s my natural way to work. So yes, I hope for more in the future!
