Club Beat #78 – Kinky Malinki’s B’day Pt 1: Manuel de la Mare

Next Saturday, Kinky Malinki celebrate fourteen years at the forefront of the house music clubbing scene. They will be joined by three of Italy’s most gifted producers and DJs and owners of the acclaimed labels, 303Lovers and Hotfingers. With Manuel de la Mare, Luigi Rocca and Alex Kenji united behind the decks for their first UK performance as Forza, this is sure to be a birthday to remember!

PlanetNotion caught up with Manuel ahead of the party to find out some facts about Forza.

You run 303Lovers and Hotfingers with Alex and Luigi and you have also produced tracks with both of them. How are they different to work with?
It’s different because they are totally different people. We are all very different; we are not similar at all; we are a pretty strange combination! It’s different but it’s always a pleasure. For example, when I did Acid As 303 with Alex, he did his bassline and he sent me his idea and I tried to do it in a very hard techno arrangement. We have some ideas and we try to do it as best. With Op-Locka, I started with a loop and stuff and I wanted to make this for the Toolroom compilation, so I sent the full track to Luigi and he added this nice vocal sample. We normally send out an almost finished track and the other guy adds his touch.

Will you produce any tracks together as Forza?
We should! But now I’m making a track with Luigi; we just started today. We want to do something for 303Lovers; we are making a new website; we are taking it in a new musical direction; we are doing many changes. We are also making some new t-shirts with a new design for the 303Lovers brand.

Will you create a Forza mix CD like your Clubbing Around The World compilation?
Yes! We are working on this; it’ll be out in November. It is a three disc album and it will be released on Toolroom. I’m just finishing a new original to be included in this CD; Alex and Luigi have just completed their mixes for the CD so I’m a bit late!

Where did the idea to perform together as Forza come from?
This is something we really love to do. We did this many years ago and over the last few years we always travel and we spend more time very far from each other. We wanted to start, when it’s possible, to tour again together. It’s a pleasure because when we play together it’s a very different set from when we are alone; I mean, I don’t even know many of the tracks the other guys are playing. It’s a sort of competition between us; we always want to play the strongest track; we always want to do our best. Even if you can’t see this from the dance floor, this is something that is going on behind the DJ booth. I think this is also why we are stronger together than we are alone. Forza is an Italian word that means strength; I think it is our strength to be together.

How do you organise the set when you DJ together?
We never organise our sets when we play alone or when we are together. We think that DJing is also improvising; we are not making a live act; we are DJs and our main focus is to make people dance.

Alex and Luigi have played for Kinky Malinki earlier in the year. Have you played for them before?
No, it’s my first time. Alex told me it’s very good so I can’t wait.

What can we expect from your first Forza performance in the UK?
What we always do: we do our best to make you have fun.

Will we be hearing some of the tracks from Hotfingers Moves vol.3 at the 14th birthday?
Yeah, of course. Also, you will be able to hear all the tracks we have been making for our Forza compilation. We have many, many new productions to play.

Finally, when is it Forza’s birthday? How will you celebrate?
We celebrate Forza everyday!

In Part 2 of our Kinky Malinki birthday special, we talk to Manuel and Luigi about the 14th birthday celebrations, out tomorrow.

Forza will be celebrating Kinky Malinki’s 14th birthday on Saturday 13th October at Indigo at the O2. Tickets are available here.
