Mysterious, London-based producer Ofei trades in sound worlds that are simultaneously expansive and intimate, inspiring and consolatory. His recently released debut track ‘London’, begins earnestly with a series of reverb-laden piano figures before being undercut and intersected by streaks of Justin Vernon-esque backing vocals and huge, unapologetic studio drums.
While it quickly becomes an exercise in unrestrained revelry at its most bombastic highs, ‘London”s seemingly celebratory nature is frequently circumvented by Ofei’s powerful vocals. It’s his smokey and soulful voice that guides the track through its countless peaks and troughs, charting a sonic directory that’s both intensely emotional and disconcertingly honest, his is a voice that speaks both of microcosmic emotional minutiae and universal truths. Certainly one to look out for, stay tuned to Ofei‘s site for further updates and tunes to be trickled out in the coming months.
You can check out some blurry footage of Ofei in the studio recording ‘London’ below – only adding to the sense of mystery surrounding the producer.
There’s also a brief teaser for further new tracks to come from Ofei. Again, it’s a rather enigmatic affair but no doubt it’ll all be revealed in good time.
