LFW SS13 Interview: Bernard Chandran

Bernard Chandran proved himself to be quite the dark horse this evening as his SS13 had us committing every single piece to a hash-tagged want list. Built around the emotional rollercoaster of losing love (and acquiring it again), the beautifully illustrated love story celebrated the finest qualities of the female form. Capturing the cyclical nature of falling in and out of love, we were greeted with delicately dog-toothed, cut-out and full skirted dresses rendered in bridal creams and whites which represented the early honeymoon stages.

The mood soon darkened as the story unfolded and the heart ache became apparent with the associated emotions depicted through the use of darker hues (lashings of black leather, PVC and sheer with the odd accent of electric blue), tougher silhouettes (leather bodices and mullet-esque hemlines) and the first appearance of prints which were geometric. Girly pinks, SS standard neutrals and the exquisite embellishments, adorning all variety of evening gown, completed the sequence and the final stage: empowerment. Excuse the pun, but I am ‘in love’.

Getting in on the post-show backstage circus we stole two precious minutes to y’know catch up.

Planet Notion: Props for such a lush show, how d’you feel it all went?
Bernard Chandran: Really smooth. I had already decided what I wanted (styling wise) a week ago so it was more about getting the production together but it was really smooth. A little hiccup but it’s ok.

PN: Ah, it happens to the best of us, it was seamless from where we were sat. Are you sad it’s all over?
BC: I really have to pack and get ready for tomorrow as I’m flying to my next client.

PN: Eek stress. Your collection tells a love story… did you design the clothes with a particular woman in mind?
BC: Yes, a woman who is my good friend and works on my team who has fallen in love again with the same person. She was single eight months ago and she’s become stronger but at the same time she’s fallen in love with a man. Now she’s romantic but at the same time she wants to tell the man that she’s stronger than before but now she’s also very sexy and fun. Of course she’s not showing it but in her dress you see it.

PN: Naw, I bet she’s thrilled. What does the future hold for Bernard Chandran?
BC: I need a person to market the brand, that’s my next thing, to find the right person and move forward to the international market.
