This Autumn brings the spectacular images of Tim Walker’s bizarre and alluring imagination to Somerset House. If you are wondering….yes you did just read that correctly. That’s right ladies and gentlemen, one of the most influential and visually exciting fashion photographers in the industry today is having his photographs provide the focus of this major exhibition, ‘Tim Walker: Story Teller,’ supported by the classic British fashion brand, Mulberry.
Tim Walker’s photographs are a fairytale brought to life, turning fashion imagery into a mystical world, letting nothing come between his imagination and the execution of his work. It’s certainly been a while since I have had the opportunity to get childishly excited about an exhibition (on par with that Christmas Eve feeling) which is why I felt the need to rave about this one so much. If you see someone eagerly waiting at the doors to Somerset House then you’re allowed to take the assumption that it’s myself. With all this burst of creativity under one roof, I have the feeling that it might be like stepping (hypothetically) into a very unusual, fairytale time machine—and all for free! I’ve always wanted to go on a journey through Tim Walker’s imagination, trying to make sense of his extravagant settings and theatrical characters…I do believe that this exhibition is a dream come true.
So get your diaries out, or in my case trusty filofax, as this is a really good chance to see into the wonderful mind of Tim Walker and his extraordinary images. Expect ornate props and beautifully displayed magazine editorials and portraits. I’ve got high expectations, and I reckon this is certainly an exhibition not to be missed.
‘Tim Walker Story Teller is exhibited at Somerset House, London, supported by Mulberry (October 18 2012 – January 27 2013), the accompanying book, Tim Walker Story Teller is published by Thames & Hudson, available from October 8 2012, £45’
