Moodboard: B Traits

The cute as a button DJ and record producer B Traits swung by Notion to let us know what inspires her. Originally hailing from the West Coast of Canada, she now resides in our fair city and given her recent successes, I can safely say we will be hearing much more from her.

Musically, the Prodigy is probably my biggest influence. Right from the very first moment that I heard ‘Breathe’ and ‘Firestarter’ I was instantly obsessed and felt that I belonged to that sound. I didn’t actually discover their earlier hits like ‘Out of Space’ until after I had experienced the album ‘Fat of the Land’. Again, what they were doing was something completely new to me and so different from the music I was hearing in my tiny home town of Nelson in British Columbia, Canada. I remember the first moment I saw Keith Flint and Maxim on Much Music (Canada’s early version of MTV). I was like ‘these guys are freaking crazy and I love it!!!’, my mum, not so much!

Gwen Stefani in No Doubt

For me, Gwen was a big female influence for me in the early years of No Doubt. She dressed completely different than any other female artist and really exuded raw power and sex appeal… to me she was a woman skankin’ to the beat of her own drum. Both Gwen and Blondie singer Debbie Harry are huge influences to me.

Coffee & The Newspaper

Two of my favorite things. Menswear and food, displayed in an appealing visual presentation.

Steel Drums

I’ve been obsessing over the sound of steel drums for that past few years and am constantly on you tube looking up videos and tracks. I am fascinated with the instant feel good vibe they create.

My hometown of Nelson, British Columbia in Canada. The most beautiful place on this planet. Whenever I need to re-charge I take a trip home. Nothing like some fishing, hiking and pot smoking to mend the writers block.

The Primal Blueprint – Mark Sisson

Lately, I’ve become rather obsessed with this book and its philosophy. I suppose you could say I’m a rather healthy person and strongly believe that ‘food is medicine’. I know.. I’m sort of a hippie, but trust me! this book will change your life!! Its changed mine for the better!! Don’t judge this book by its cover!!

The House Crew – Euphoria (Nino’s Dream mix)

This track is one of my all time favorites and it never gets old for me. It came out in 1993 and It still goes off when I play it in my DJ sets.

Burberry Metallics

Burberry Prorsum Spring Summer 2013 Metallics. I like shiny things. I’m very much looking forward to this season.

Hype Williams

Undoubtedly, ALL of my favourite music videos are made by this man. Whenever I need some visual stimulation I always head to You Tube to watch a few of these for some inspiration.

The Specials

Ska is a large influence on my musical life. generally anything that had a rather interesting stylish groove to it.

Photographs of magical forts

I wish to one day build the ultimate writing fort. A place that is strictly for being creative and chilling out.

Lena Dunham. She’s a G! She writes, directs and acts in the series and she just scooped 2 golden globes for it! talk about an inspiration! I’ve just completed season 1 and its my new favourite show.

Thoughtless – S.C. Stephens

Every now and then I need a book that I can really just veg out in. After I come home from the studio I need some ‘wind down’ time. Usually, I need at least an hour for the music loop to stop playing in my head and I just try to relax my brain and think about something mindless. For these times, I like to read really cheesy romance/ love triangle books.

The Neptunes

At one point I believed these guys could do no wrong! I still look up to these lot. They were making the sickest underground beats while producing for the biggest pop singers at the same time!! And even the pop beats were unreal!!! Britney Spears’ Slave For You is a huge riddim!!!
