Secret 7″: A new take on vinyl artwork

“An inspired challenge set by seven hosts; Elton John, Jessie Ware, Nas, Laura Marling, Haim, Nick Drake & Public Enemy”

In a nutshell, Secret 7″ is about bringing together emerging artists and established musicians in aid of worthwhile causes. Now in its second year, Secret 7″ is back on the hunt for artistic talent to get involved with creating a design for a limited run of 7″ vinyl covers from selected songs by one of the seven hosting artists.  The final pieces of Secret 7″ artwork will be viewed by millions and chosen out of thousands of expected submissions, with the public voting on their favourite works via Facebook and Twitter. All 700 unique vinyl covers will then be pressed and displayed in the London gallery space of Mother, the Uk’s largest creative agency for a week long exhibition. To conclude the exhibition there will be a live sale on 20th April, to coincide with Record Store Day, where the public will get the opportunity to buy the 7″ vinyl artwork. The secret of who created the piece and which song it is for will not be revealed until after it is bought; the secret lies within.

This video from last year sums up the project as a whole and gives you an idea of the kind of artwork submitted:

This year Secret 7″ is working in support of youth charity Art Against Knives, an organisation which provides creative opportunities designed by young people for young people, supporting local communities to acquire relevant space and resources to create creative positive spaces for those most at risk of gang culture. In addition, they are striving to create a network between pre-established organisations that already work to reduce knife crime in London.

The deadline for submitting artwork is 18th February, less than two weeks away, so get your thinking caps on and creative juices flowing. From the submissions only 50 will be chosen per song so only the creme de la creme will make it to the exhibition in April. The songs have been released so let’s hope one of these take your fancy:

Elton John – Bennie & The Jets
HAIM – Better Off
Jessie Ware – Still Love Me
Laura Marling – The Beast
Nas – The Don
Nick Drake – Rider On The Wheel
Public Enemy – Harder Than You Think

Secret 7″ is working in partnership with Talenthouse, Universal Music and is supporting Art Against Knives.
