News: The Land of Oz comes to LFW

Right in the middle of the madness of LFW, tucked away in the BFC space at Somerset House we were treated to a viewing of the costumes for upcoming film ‘Oz the Great and Powerful’. Some of the stand out pieces from the film, including those worn by leads Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams, were picked from over 2000 costumes designed by Gary Jones and Michael Kutsche. The dress designed by William Tempest’s to be worn on the red carpet at the European Premiere of the film was a clear highlight. Sketches were also on display allowing visitors to see the process from conception to finished product. Shoe designer Nicholas Kirkwood displayed some of his shoe designs for the very first time; these will be available exclusively on the Selfridges yellow brick road in early March.

In conjunction with the exhibition, a Fashion of Oz lookbook has been released so that anyone on any budget can hit the high street and bring a little bit of the magical to their everyday looks. With emerald green named as 2013′s colour of the year (who knew that even existed), the Emerald city look is definitely in, and fantasy also looks to be a key trend this season. oz-emerald

There are also features on each of the characters; Mila Kunis’ Theodora sports deep claret red almost Victorian inspired outfits; Michelle Williams is Glinda, demure, opulent and pastel dresses; and Rachel Weisz is Evanora whose hauntingly Gothic cross military cross art deco outfits are easily found across the high street in dresses featuring feathers, lace and sheer opulence. With a nod to summer, and influenced by China Town blue and white pottery, another favourite are these dresses from Topshop.
