BOTW Video: Jaws – ‘Friend Like You’

Having only been gigging together for a year now, you could certainly be forgiven for thinking that Birmingham’s Jaws were jumping the gun a little by releasing a video composed of tour footage for their latest single, ‘Friend Like You‘. Then again, the last twelve months have been a bit of a whirlwind for the nascent four-piece: their two singles to date, ‘Surround You‘ and ‘Toucan Surf‘, have earned them glowing plaudits on many a tastemaker blog, they’ve taken to stages – and tours – with their fellow Brummies Swim Deep and Peace, and their much-touted B-town scene has continued its ongoing expansion into wider musical consciousness.

Where the video for ‘Friend Like You’ truly succeeds though is in its bittersweet capturing of the highs and lows of being a band on the road. When placed over as nostalgic a paean to camaraderie as ‘Friend Like You’, the accompanying footage perfectly encapsulates the struggles – and laughs – of a band taking on the world and trying to make a name for themselves, ardent in their solidarity and belief in one another. A sweet memento to the riotous nights, tedious soundchecks and hellishly long van trips of the touring lifestyle, it brings to mind that most quoted of Minutemen lines: “Our band could be your life. Punk rock changed our lives.”
