G-Sessions: Patrick Mohr at Voo Store, Berlin

G-Shock are slowly taking Europe – not in an aggressive, militant way though, in a way that Tyler Brule of Monocle magazine might term ‘soft power.’ They are building a network of up-and-coming talent in a pan-European series called G-Sessions, which aims to harness the local creativity of the city and distil it into a project of some sort. With no limits to the chosen medium; illustration, street art, songs or films, this choice remains completely up to the artist.

So a couple of weeks back, we jetted over to Berlin for the launch of the German leg. G-Shock have been collaborating with the fashion designer Patrick Mohr (him of conceptual fashion shows, haute androgyny and – infamously – homeless men as models) and the pop-up is currently being hosted at cutting-edge Berlin store, Voo. It’s the kind of initiative that really fires the old grey matter up: with a blank canvas and Patrick’s curated team of local creatives, this is going to be one competition that pits the crème de la crème of Europe’s young talent against each other.

As well as Berlin, sessions are taking place across Europe in Paris, Amsterdam, London, Milan, Barcelona and St. Petersburg; with a grand finale taking place in Berlin in November. The most exciting and creative G-SHOCK interpretation can look forward to receiving the Spirit of Toughness Award. To spread the style and spirit, the winning concept and associated watch will also see the light of day as a real production model – so, each participant gets the chance to show off their own G-SHOCK design where it is supposed to be worn: right on the wrist!

It’s both a great excuse for a party and an exciting look at how young creatives will approach such a project, and we for one can’t wait to see what each city comes up with.

In the meantime, head to the G-Sessions website for updates and further info www.g-sessions.eu or follow them on Twitter (@GSHOCK_OFFICIAL)
