Preview: Barbour AW13 (‘Department B’)

Barbour have tantelised us with a preview of their AW13 collection, which concentrates on bespoke design and individuality.

Carrying the name ‘Department B’, the collection takes inspiration from the special customisation room of the original Barbour factory in South Shields, a department that took requests from individual customers to refine and alter jackets to suit personal needs. With this in mind, ‘Departmant B’ is focusing on the details of their jackets, knitwear and shirts by adding patches, pockets and zips, all in a modern and elegant manner.

A major item in Barbour’s AW13 collection is the Commander Jacket (above), as influenced by the piece rocked by James Bond (Daniel Craig) in Skyfall. Customised for the film in a similar fashion to the original Department B, the Commander Jacket has been added to AW13 after jackets similar to the item sold out.  Other jackets to be given a new look through AW13 are the Hunnam and Cassells, with the Hunnam now shorter in length and darker and the Cassells featuring a secret hood and stand-out front placket.

Head of menswear at Barbour says: ‘There are many jackets in Barbour’s archive that feature unusual customisations, all which tell their own story about the wearer of the jacket and offer interesting clues about their life. We wanted to create a collection that celebrated this attention to detail, designing clothes for a modern man who appreciates the thought and meaning behind the hidden technical details that can be found in a garment.’
