Trending: jewellery

I am such a magpie. I see something shiny and my eyes gravitate towards it to a point where I have occasionally attracted some odd looks from the owner of aforementioned shiny thing. I love layering jewellery – from statement necklaces and stacking bangles to rings on every finger – much to the annoyance of my husband who paid just a bit for the rock on my left hand. But we ladies can’t help it because we love some bling, whether it’s just a little costume jewellery or the Real McCoy. If there is one piece of fashion advice I will issue this season it is: accessorise, accessorise, accessorise.

Opulence does not even describe the jewellery that stomped down the catwalk. The Dolce and Gabbana crown from their Autumn Winter collection will complete any outfit, don’t you think? Or what about layered chains from Michael Kors, Bottega Veneta or Chanel?  That’s without mentioning the punk-esque bracelets from Saint Laurent, and rings on every finger by Dior. I’ll need to take out a new insurance policy I reckon.

Sadly my small purse may not be able to accommodate the purchase of the luxury collections, but I have been using my savvy eye to recreate these looks on a budget (except for the crown, maybe). The easiest look to be inspired by is the chain trend that will add edge to anything casual. Chain necklaces with oversize links work with collared shirts for a more androgynous look, but can be customised by adding charms like costume jewels or monograms to make them more attuned to your style. One huge trend I have witnessed first-hand is insects. Not real ones, but a bejewelled tribute to your favourite spider or beetle, as seen at Lanvin on sweatshirts and corsets. A chain necklace can also double up as a bangle by wrapping it around you wrist, a nice interpretation of the accessories seen at Chanel.

Aside from the chain, the statement necklace is the seasonal must have. Irish designer Joanne Hynes has been the champion of the embellished collar over a number of seasons, with her pieces being seen on British DJ Jasmin and actress Antonia Campbell-Hughes. Nothing adds pizazz to something plain like a stand out collar or choker. Gucci and Donna Karen are also joining the queue with their chokers this season, something I envisage seeing a lot of this September come London Fashion Week. Collars can be tricky to wear and suit a shorter hair style or an up-do and also need to be the stand out piece. When it comes to earrings, bangles and belts, less is definitely more.

There is also the sometimes neglected ears. Large dazzling drop earrings are my top pick for the party season. Emerald green, rich ruby and even canary yellow are the seasonal colours which will make any LBD stand out. And don’t be afraid to mix it up a little by wearing embellished earrings with a sweatshirt and styled with an a-line skirt, making a casual look work in the evening.

As you can see, it’s all about the sparkle.
