Introducing: I Have A Tribe

On ‘Monsoon’, his debut track under the I Have A Tribe moniker, Patrick O’Laoghaire (Slow Skies) touches upon those moments of utter content we find before falling into the arms of sleep. Recorded in the front room of Conor O’Brien – of O’Laoghaire’s fellow Irishmen, Villagers – it’s a softly spun, piano-led ballad that perfectly captures the brief period between waking thoughts and forty winks; a haze-hued hinterland in which we’re unaware of all but the most basic of stimuli. It’s hypnagogic pop in the most literal sense of the term.

Grounded in the idea of rainstorms as a self-cleansing experience, O’Laoghaire describes it as follows: “Imagine you could stand in the rain and let it wash off everything you were worried about.” It’s all very romantic and in the arms of a lesser artist could easily seem contrived. You only have to take one listen to hear the sheer, steely belief in his nimble falsetto, though; it’s hard not to be convinced. It’s all very quiet and settled right now for the Dublin resident but with an EP due later this year, there could well be a downpour on the way yet.
