BEAUTIFY: The C Word

Although I may be manically running after schedules, trying to sort out camera batteries and wondering what the f**k I might wear to the ever approaching LFW SS14 shows on Friday… No, I’m not talking about that ‘C’ word.

I am of course talking about Vitamin C. Duh. And actually- I’m gonna need a whole lot of it to keep me and my skin alive over the next five days.

We all know the benefits of taking a Vit C supplement everyday- antioxidant support, keep away colds, healthy blood etc etc. But what about slapping some on your face? Well, believe it or not, it’s as important to apply it topically to your skin with it as it is to feed it to your insides. Listen up.

Wherever you put it, Vitamin C will always be one of the most powerful antioxidants. And when it comes to skincare, it’s a favourite for all ages and skin types because it prevents free radical damage (from smoke, stress, pollution…), plumps up your collagen supply (and therefore slowing down the ageing process), it’s lightens pigmentation and brightens skin tone. Pretty good deal right?

One of my favourite Vitamin C boosters is Aesop’s B Triple C Balancing Gel that is like heaven.on.earth. The gel isn’t sticky like you’d expect, and melts into the skin within seconds, leaving it perfectly hydrated, plump and matte. I use it twice a week to give me a pick-me-up. (But perhaps I’ll need it every morning come #LFW). 60ml for £81. It’s pricey, but worth it.

However, if you’re looking for something a little more affordable in terms of a pick-me-up- look no further than Kiko’s EnerC Booster. Coming in at a very reasonable £7.90, the serum is enriched with our favourite skin strengthening vitamin and can be added to your usual cream as a ‘booster’ by stimulating skin cell viability. I love how you can add it to any other product.

No, don’t worry- I don’t think CC stands for a double dose of Vitamin C. Origins’ Smarty Plants CC SPF 20 complexion corrector is in fact packed with Vitamin C too, because you can never have enough C’s. One of our current favourite CC’s on the market (since there seems to be about three thousand since we said ‘we’re over you’ to BB creams). This CC also gets extra brownie points for added SPF. The cream works by releasing it’s antioxidants of Green Tea, Vitamin E and C when applied to the skin and helps protect you throughout the day from pollution and ozone. As well as protecting, it perfects skin tone with Salicylic acid and Chestnut extract, and finally corrects any blotchy skin tones with it’s added dash of coloured plant minerals. What I love most about this is that it matches so many skin tones, and therefore you only need to choose between Light/Medium or Medium/Deep. Easy. 40ml for £28.
