BEAUTIFY: Don’t be afraid of the Tan

Tan talk is filled with horror stories of becoming a streak freak, but these days even my granny can whack on a slick of fake tan with ease.  Catwalk culture of AW13 was looking towards a sporty glow. Here’s our top tips for keeping up a hint of sunshine through the gloomy months.

For a smooth application a buffed bod is a must. Try a salt scrub to briskly sweep away greyish dead skin cells Espa Invigorating Salt Scrub, £7.15 for 2 is soaked with sweet almond oil to deeply moisturise winter bitten skin.  For ultra dry skin try out the lazy girls body brush Elle Macpherson The Body Rotating Dry Brush, £39.99 it sloughs away dead skin cells and releases trapped hairs to rid you of bumpy skin.

_MG_3287Admittedly I’m from Newcastle so back in my teens I’ve had my fair share of heaving on fake tan in a bid to be crowned a bronze goddess. Here’s our top trusted buys for keeping it ‘real’.

The trick is to keep your glow as subtle as you can. Try a few drops of Clarins Liquid Bronze Self Tanning, £18 on a cotton wool pad after moisturisng, simply sweep over sun catching areas cheek bones, shoulders and collar bones for a light tint. More offerings from Clarins  include the sweet cocoa scented Delicious Self Tanning Cream, £22. An  aloe vera infused rich cream with anti-aging benefits making it more like a a super body butter than tans. Brings whole new meaning to chocolate orange this winter (Dad Joke).

For those who prefer a light natural tan Clinique Self Sun Face Tinted Lotion, £17.50 and Body Tinted Lotion, £18 offers up instant glow that gradually deepens throughout the day. If you’re naturally olive toned skin but needing a refresh over winter, try out CB Cocoa Brown by Marissa Carter, £7.99 an ultra dark thick mousse that dries quickly meaning no sticky mess at bed time. Alternatively try Caudalie Divine Legs, £26 for a flush of colour with a peppery scent you can wash off with ease.

Dark nights however hard we try always means lazy bunnies. Who can truly be bothered to keep a tan topped up throughout the winter months? Vita Liberata pHemomenal, £37.50 is a the ultra long lasting formula for a tan that lasts 2-3  weeks. It dries in seconds and needs to be layered up 2-3 times over an hour, a James Read Tanning Mitt, £6 is perfect for easy blending. The best part is there is no biscuit smell just a golden streak free bronzing. Always have to hand a Pure Tan Self Tan Removal Mitt, £19 for the inevitable mishaps.

Avoiding the tell tale flakey tan as it comes to the end of the week is a must. Opt for African Botanics Marula Firming Botanical Body Oil, £52 a fast absorbing dry oil rich in antioxidants keeps lackluster skin in check.

For dried out skin thats in need of something a little hard core Neal’s Yard Aromatic Body Butter, £22.50 is a luxe rich cream with shea and cocoa – slathered on and left to soak in does the trick. Finish up your glow with a slick of Vita Liberata Capture The Light, £29.95 the translucent body makeup with sheen in the perfect touch up tool for veins and uneven tone.
