When Californian four-piece Northern American chose to name their debut EP Happiness Hungover earlier this year, it revealed a great deal about the lush, evocative indie that the quartet produce. With nods to the breezy pop-tinged brilliance of their LA peers Local Natives, the downplayed dramatics of US stalwarts The National and the dream-like textural soundplay of their Heist or Hit labelmates Simian Ghost, the band’s output to date trades in that distinctly post-midday optimism that comes with leaving one’s hangover behind and discovering the day anew.
‘Wander’, the group’s first official single ahead of a debut full-length due next summer, feels like the perfect synthesis of this. Its gently strummed guitars, rollicking rhythms and sunny sentiments ably encapsulating that early afternoon hopefulness when the sunlight becomes less of a burden for tired eyes and more an illuminative force for all that’s right in the world. If you want to feel good about the day ahead, we suggest getting this one on repeat:

Wander is available from January 20th on Heist or Hit.
