BEAUTIFY: All Night Long

New Year’s Eve is a bitch, isn’t she? Not only do you have to toy with yourself each and every year about what you’re going to do, who you’ll be with, if a kiss is on the cards but you ALSO have to miraculously manage to look bloody great for at least 12 hours. Sound like too much to handle? Never. Here’s NOTION’s guide to all you need in the beauty department for seeing 2014 in with the biggest smile (and hair)  yet.

SKIN: The Night Before (aka the 3oth December)

There was never two more perfectly New Year’s Eve named products than Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate and Sampar’s So Much to Dew Midnight Mask. Apply before you go to bed the midnight BEFORE the big one, and you’ll have supple, smooth and rehydrated (from all the Christmas drinking…) skin on the 31st, ready for a long night.

If you feel like you need an extra dosage of getting-rid-of-Christmas-skin then try out Aromatherapy Associates Essential Enzyme Peel that’ll polish off any dead skin and awaken a glowing complexion. To cleanse, try Neal’s Yards Wild Rose Beauty Balm which, with exceptionally large amounts of rosehip oil is sure to soothe any irritations and make skin radiant again. After, reach for the Rose Face Mask from Fresh which gives the skin an extra rosy booster whilst hydrating and toning unbalanced skin.

With a seemingly never ending array of makeup, nail varnishes and foundations on the market, it can be overwhelming to even walk down the beauty aisle. As luck would have it (wouldn’t you know!) we’ve picked out the products that will stand the test of time on New Year’s Eve.

Nails! Nailart! Glitter! Yes… nails are still big, duh. Especially on NYE when – let’s be honest – is the one night of the year you can get away with having glitter in most places of your body. Keep it on your nails and you’ll look a lot most tasteful. Our favourite has to be the Paul & Joe glitter nail varnish. However, we’re rather partial to Nails Inc, Mavala, Boutique and Bad Apple too.

When it comes to NYE make-up, the name of the game is longevity. Begin well by choosing a good primer. We love Wild About Beauty’s Mattyfying Balm that gets rid of any unwanted shine, makes your skin super smooth and foundation a dream to apply (and stay there). Alternatively, Pür Mineral’s Correcting Primer works wonders before an all-nighter, and before the 4-in-1 foundation which promises to last 14 hours!

If you want a little more attention to you skincare in you foundation, Dr Lewinn’s Skin Perfect Foundation houses tourmaline and rose stem cells to enhance radiance throughout the day (or night, in this case) as well as being a damn good foundation. Love. And if you need EVEN more covering up, apply Sothys Pore Refiner System before hand to hide any unsightly pores.

Colour wise with makeup, Lord & Berry have our seal of approval. Beautifully bright colours (just the right kind of bright, not the wrong side of neon) from their lipsticks and lip crayons, whilst the long lasting Smudgeproof eyeliner is a true no-budger and therefore ideal for avoiding any mishaps come midnight. Plus, they’re now stocked on Asos, making them an easy addition to your order for NYE. If you want something as a back up to throw in your bag, try Laqa&Co for their Fat Lip Pencil which is exactly as the name suggests: a no nonsense fat lip pencil to hide red-wine-lips of frozen-to-death-outside-waiting for fireworks blue lips.

If you’re STILL paranoid about sliding makeup, just add a spritx of NYX Dewy Finish which for an amazing £8 sets your make up for the night. No hairspray girls, no hairspray on your face. Please.

hair style NYE

Let’s keep this as short as possible, since no one needs to be wasting time away doing their hair anymore- with these great products it’ll look bloody great in no time.

Your hair needs moisture to last a long night; smoke, wind and everything in between dries the hair out. To avoid looking bedraggled before you’ve even reached your party destination, apply a hair oil on damp clean hair. Argan 5+ Oil Eixir is great for thick and knot-prone hair, whilst Trevor Sorbie’s Colour Enhance Oil is just the right weight for coloured hair that needs an extra dosage of shine. Style as usual, with the addition of Color WOW’s Raise the Root Spray thickening and lift spray that gives you a special New Year’s Eve boost (although, we highly recommend all of their products). Another great addition, and finish to your hairstyle for the night is Philip Kingsley’s Weatherproof hairspray that seals in moisture and holds, without that sticky feel. Take with you Sebastian’s Drynamic spray in case of hair-flatness throughout the night, or if you’ve got thin hair that’s prone to oiliness.

SKIN: The day After (aka 1st January)

First point of call when (if ever) you wake up. Cool your skin. Have Neal’s Yard’s antioxidant full White Tea Facial Mist on your bedside table, ready. It’s calming organic aloe vera, aromatherapeutic organic essential oils and soothing Bach Flower Remedies will give your skin a breathe of fresh air first thing in the morning before you’ve got time to think about anything else but your oncoming hangover.

Next up: (when you’ve had a few Nurofen…) Mask it. Hydration needs to be found. (Also, apparently all great face masks live in blue tubes?) Clinique’s turnaround instant facial gives you an at-home microdermabrasion whilst Clarins’ HydraQuench Cream mask was especially designed for dehydrated skin, which means: for 1st January.

Put something rich on your skin (rich being the operative word). This is the time when you can lather you skin up, don’t overdo it too much, but put a lot more on than your usually would. Same applies for when you’re normally hungover: your skin needs more attention. SK-II offers it’s new smoothing and pore-minimising Essential Power Essence (even the name just sounds like it does good). The same can be said for Sensai’s Soothing Cream, who’s light, airy formula provides speedy relief for irritated and tired skin.

Sleep Well on the 1st. Slather on Institut Esthederm’s Intensif Hyaluronic acid cream to add some much needed plumpness to your skin. You can even mix it with Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Beauty Sleep Concentrate which is packed full of a smoothing tri-peptide, anti-oxidant rich grape seed oil and regenerating narcissus tazetta bulb extract all with soothing properties. That’s some concentrate.

Now, after all that… Have a very Happy New Year!
