Independent Venue Week

People tend to forget the fact that independent venues have always been that crucial stepping stone for musicians; enabling them to go on to sell out those sponsored gigs that, ironically, end up obscuring the smaller, yet essential venues. With the music industry operating a scorched earth policy—advancing through the pop landscape with their various artists—Independent Venue Week are doing good work rejuvenating things from the ground up.

From Tuesday 28th January to Sunday 2nd February, Independent Venue Week will be organizing a series of gigs at 18 participating venues. Places like The Library (Leeds), The Leadmill (Sheffield), and the legendary Soup Kitchen (Manchester) have been confirmed already, whilst the BBC are scheduled to introduce shows on national radio, as well as 40 regional stations.

One of our favourite artists at the moment, Bipolar Sunshine, remembers the Soup Kitchen rather fondly:

My first show as bipolar sunshine was in Soup Kitchen—the sound, the lighting; everything was on point. It was the first time trying out some new material so the gig meant a lot to me. Also playing a smaller venue first felt nice. It was nice to see growt—and the people who worked for the venue that night were good as well.
