Playlist: Simian Mobile Disco

After the success of their last album ‘Unpatterns’, Simian Mobile Disco are back again with their latest release. Yet this time, it’s a whole lot different. Wanting to challenge themselves, the duo ditched their computers and journeyed to the Southern Californian desert with nothing but two modular synths, two sequencers, a mixer, and a bottle of factor 50. Recorded under the desert sun, before being polished at home in the studio, ‘Whorl’ is a refreshingly experimental leap into a myriad of new sounds and underground tones. Take a listen to their latest single ‘Tangents’ which features on the forthcoming album.

‘Whorl’ is scheduled to be released on September 8th, but until then, we asked the boys to compile a list of the songs that influenced the album…

Roman Fluegel – Parade

Forthcoming from Roman’s eagerly anticipated new album. This is pretty different to what most people expected I think – an excellent slice of electronic pop, with some Krawftwerk-ian nods in the melodies.

Cosmin TRG – Broken Heart

Going completely the other temporal direction, way back in the mists of 2007 – one of Cosmin’s first releases for the ever excellent Hessle.

Trevino – Forged

A nice growly bit of techno from Marcus. You can hear the d&b influence in this one for sure…

Bicep – Satisfy (Brassica rmx)

Another favourite artist of ours, Brassica, turned in this incredible slow-trance remix of Bicep’s ‘Satisfy’.

Mike Denhert – Pneumatic

Classic from Mike, on Rush Hour. The grit and dirt on this, combined with that piano riff makes for a proper warehouse rave tune.

Psychatron – Tipping Point (3am front left speaker mix)

Big room techno at its finest from Psycatron.
