AIAIAI TMA-2 Modular Headphone review

Why have one pair of headphones when you could have four? AIAIAI’s latest release gives you the option of building your own headphones, whatever your need – say hello to the TMA-2 Modular.

Offering a range of interchangeable options across sound, function, comfort and design, the TMA-2 Modular headphones are the ultimate in personalised sound that’s totally unique. There’s the All-Round preset, followed by the Young Guru, DJ and Studio presets. It means that audiophiles can adapt and tailor their headphones into different creative contexts: music on the go? No problem. DJ headgear? Done. Studio production and editing? You’re covered.

The TMA-2 Modular headphones parts come in labelled packets with simple instructions – assembly takes all of two minutes, but if you need a hand, watch the video below.

The TMA-2 headphones are made from an enhanced polyamide TR90 that allows for superior durability and flexibility under pressure – we literally can’t stress this enough (get it?). You can twist and contort the headband and it will bounce back. Great for those needed a pair that can stand up to a grab-it-and-go lifestyle. We did note that the modular aspect of the headphones does leave them feeling a little like a rattle, but only when in hand, on your head they are still and very comfortable.

We had the chance to get out hands on the All-Round presets and have been giving them a whirl over the past two weeks. This preset is described as providing “balanced sound for all music genres. With its slim, versatile, lightweight design it is suited for on-the-go and home listening.”

What did we think of it? The description is pretty much bang on. The All-Round preset looks and feels the most like AIAIAI’s popular predecessor, the TMA-1, and offers lightweight wear that super comfortable. The sound profile is pretty neutral – meaning it offers a good audio experience across the board, but it isn’t anything groundbreaking. Those who want stronger bass or crisper mid-tones are going to need to check out the other presets – we’d be eager to try out the DJ headphones to experience the fuller, richer profile.

The AIAIA All-Round headphones come in at around £100, so it does offer great value for money for the quality and build. Their stylish matte black design is a winner for us and places these headphones firmly on our recommended list for those seeking sweet sound at an accessible price. The best part is being able to add to them at a later date.
