PlanetNotion probably shouldn’t like this album. A guy called Dent May plays the Ukulele on an album appropriately, but nonetheless ridiculously titled: The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele. Sounds a bit naff, right? And yet it isn’t. It envisages images of downing a £20 Cappuccino in a Starbucks that used to be a diner, where kids ate Knickerbocker Glories and 45s played on a 1950s jukebox; where guys would spin their gals inside and Cadillac’s would spin donuts outside. It’s music from the good feeling days of yore, brought forward into a new millennia with tales from the 21st Century and delivered in a distinct part crooner, part falsetto brogue. As for the music, the range from track to track is so eclectic that it really shouldn’t work. It should be messy, with a samba infused song one minute, Beach Boys doo-wop harmonies the next, barber-shop vocals, country-twangs and even a tropical-sound on 26 Miles (Santa Catalina). The saving grace is both the consistency of the Ukulele, which brings each track - no matter how diverse - together, and May’s ability to write humorous, inventive and ultimately brilliant lyrics. A particular highlight is Howard, a track telling the story of a failed musician who travels the small-circuit as a one-man show, whilst putting on weight, going bald and getting stoned all day. You really couldn’t make it up. All in all, Dent May proves that music on a Ukulele can hit you twice as hard as a guitar-riff, accompanied by stories of longing (Love Song 2009), getting stoned (College Town Boy) and being an alcoholic (I‘m An Alcoholic). The name may sound naff, but the sound of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele really isn‘t. Top drawer. DD
