Craig Richards presents 'The Nothing Special' @ Fabric, April 26th
25/04/2008
You can work a lifetime to reach your goal and still end up in a crummy bed-sit at 50 with a pot-belly and a packet of condoms ten years out of date. Maybe when you reach that pinnacle you’ll look back and wonder: “Why, oh why, didn’t I get my chance?” The thing is, some people deserve a chance and some people don’t. Take house and techno luminary Craig Richards, throwing out fresh material in the same place (namely Fabric) week in, week out for practically eight and a half years. Well, now Craig’s been rewarded for his do or die attitude with his very own bi-monthly club night at the venue – and it kicks off on Saturday 26th April!

You could say Craig’s never been your run of the mill house and tech DJ and, if you said that, you’d be right. See, the thing about Craig is that when he takes to the decks it’s a ‘music’ meets ‘art’ philosophy. Like Pink Floyd, only a tad more “down with the kids” and 2008. Craig’s love of DJing, painting, graphic design and photography (the arts), is going to be brought to the forefront in his new ‘The Nothing Special’ club night. Not the most apt name when you consider that ‘The Nothing Special’ has the credentials of one of the biggest spectacles in sound and vision on the bi-monthly house and tech circuit.

Alas, you can expect to be taken on a musical journey and not a boring one like the ‘Savings Bank Museum’ in Dumfries, but one that’s “deep” and “wonderful” and actually surges to that crucial point when you lose all inhibitions and dance like a Gibbon on 5 grams of speed. That’s a fine balance to strike, the deep and minimal and the sacred groove, but Craig’s a master of achieving it and so are the DJs he’s invited for ‘The Nothing Special’ launch.

Joining Craig in the first room will be hand-picked favourites from his Detroit native including experimental, mood-based, tech-producer DeepChord. It doesn’t stop there, with DeepChord presenting a live-set alongside Steve Hitchell (Soultek) as Echospace. If you’re unaware of Echospace they’ve gained quite a rep on the underground circuit with their ‘The Coldest Season’ LP, which explored everything from industrial soundscapes to dubbed-out ambience – all recorded on vintage equipment. Texan producer Convextion will also be joining Room One with his deep, deep, dubbed-out techno and electro sounds.

In summary, we’ll let Craig do the talking: “The nights will vary in feel but will always have me playing from beginning to end. The variety in the nights will represent the variety in my sets. The first night presents Deepchord and Convextion, as they represent a dub techno sound which I have supported for a long time. A sound which is particularly overwhelming on the Fabric system.”  Nice. Words: Dave Dryden
