Thugs and Hugs 1st Birthday Reload, The Legion, Old Street, Easter Sunday
12/03/2008
Thugs and Hugs. Two choice words that hardly go together. I mean, whoever heard of an armed robber or a renowned thief embracing like long lost souls? Alas, we’re not talking about Lotto louts or muggers here, oh no, we’re talking about the dub-step drenched, bassline banging, garage glistening, and hip-hop heavy ‘Thugs and Hugs 1st Birthday Reload’. HOLLAH!

2007 saw the likes of Toddla T, Zombie Disco Squad, Brother Reade, and Squeak E Clean grace Thugs and Hugs, and this event in London will be no different. Oh no, in fact, some would argue it’s oozing with just as much goodness, if not more.

Hailing from the highlands, Drums of Death will be bringing electro, grime and soul to Thugs and Hugs. Interestingly, the Scot was inspired by vaudeville theatre (freak shows and burlesque and the like), as well as his time spent in death metal bands. Anyway, Drums of Death has been delving into acid-hip-hop-and-grime-electro as of late, which sounds fan-fucking-tastic, and he’s signed to Greco-Roman Records of Hot Chip notoriety, which is just as groovy.

DJ Producer DJ GS will also be heading to Old Street. If you didn’t already know, DJ GS is the bassline king and he just loves “stinking fucking basslines” man! In fact, if DJ GS was a Mafiosi he’d be the Don Corleone of the bassline world, the rest of the Northern Line posse his 'soldiers'. DJ Smutlee, meanwhile, is a local London talent who brings a whole host of old style club music and future hits to his sets. The DJ has been championed by just about everybody on the dance circuit. We’re talking Kiss FM, Dirty Canvas, Sinden, Yo Yo and of course Thugs and Hugs, which says a hell of a lot about his subliminal skills.

Young and Positive will be playing “wobbly as fuck” Jamaican 7”s, bass-skank floor-fillers and ragga grooves, wearing his customary street clobber.  Oh yeah, the lads got style. And bringing something a little different to the night will be Karborn, the precocious London-based fine artist who puts on visual displays of biblical proportions. We’re talking some mad, mad digitals here, man; I mean Karborn’s worked with the likes of Nike, XL Recordings and Talib Kweli. Let’s face it; music without a visual show is like taking a shit without literature. It’s not the same, and when it’s good, you stick with the show a lot longer.

Alas, Thugs and Hugs co-creators and co-founding resident DJs PatchWorK Pirates and DJ Gigolo “The Mixx” Knight will be on hand, blowing out the candles and receiving the bumps as a year in the life of Thugs and Hugs reaches a climax.
