Twisted Licks presents Acoustic Ladyland. Cargo. Thursday 9th July.

God damn the sun! It’s okay when you’re sitting in a garden with a crate of beer, a joint and a BBQ; the windows wide open and good time music blaring through (we’re thinking Wilbert Longmire’s 1978 classic: Sunny Side Up ). But sitting here at our desk, sweating like a self-conscious virgin in an Amsterdam whore-house, just doesn’t cut the mustard. It’s horrible. Not least because we’ll have to endure two London buses and a London train home; which inevitably means burger wrappers and chicken bones on chairs, stinking and rotting the place out. Not to mention the sweaty commuters, each prone to fits of outrage at the merest brush of contact. Each one more insane than the last. Buy beer; open beer; endure. It really is the only way. Alas, for fans of Wilkkommen Records , we bring momentary cheer. The label, featuring bands and artists that form the Wilkkommen Collective, will present a mini-festival with two stages at Stanmer House , Brighton, on July 5th. Playing will be a artists signed to the label, including Ivor Novello nominated The Leisure Society , twelve piece post-folk orchestra Sons of Noel and Adrian , Peggy Sue and multi-instrumentalist Robert Stillman . The festival, which was previously held at Charleston House, situated between Brighton and Eastbourne, will move into Stanmer House with the intention of more acts and bigger performances. The Grade I listed building, erected in 1722, is situated in the middle of a stunning Sussex nature reserve and is just a 5-10 minute walk from Falmer train station, which is easily accessible from major train stations including London Victoria. For full line-up and further info visit WilkkommenRecords.Co.UK

Those of you in Berlin this week should consider the following: 1. in November, it will be 20 years since the Wall came down, presaging the end of the Cold War; 2. no, that is not a piece of the Wall you just bought from an 'interesting' looking man near Brandenburger Tor; 3. I don't care that he gave you a commemorative certificate of authenticity signed by Erich Mielke, Mielke wasn't in the habit of signing such things. You've been had. 4. Fun fact! Gorbachev actually thought that by opening the borders people would choose communism over the West. Bless 'im. BUT MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL IS 5. Ladyhawke and Jean-Luc Godard of French Cinema's nouvelle vague Joe Goddard of Hot Chip shall be your sttylishly-clad DJesters for a night of chic amusements at the launch of Puma's Rudolf Dassler AW09 collection this coming Thursday in Berlin! Alongside them will be rubbish early noughties baseball comedy with the then unknown Zach Braff Berlin crew who are cooler than you Broken Hearts Club (You did the strike-through text gag already, get on with it. Ed.) C'est magnifique! (Wrong country. You're fired. Ed.) Here are the important details: PUMA AND MODULAR PRESENT RUDOLF DASSLER AW09 LAUNCH PARTY Thursday 2nd July 2009 @ The Puma Store Tauentzienstrasse 18, Berlin LADYHAWKE HOT CHIP'S JOE GODDARD BROKEN HEARTS CLUB [Ingrid, Niki and Conny] MODULAR DJs Look out for your Notion Fashion Crew there! How can people say that darts isn’t a sport? You hear it all the time. People say: “look at the gut on that fat f*ck, this isn’t a sport. If it was a sport he’d be walking around like Jet Li”. Thing is, we just played two games of table football, or foosball as it’s better known. Now, some people might say that, like darts, foosball isn’t a sport. WRONG. Foosball is a sport. Our arse crack has that sweaty smell wafting from it, our pits are rising damp and our curly locks have gone all Einstein on our arse. So DARTS and FOOSBALL are sports. Both are mentally and physically draining. Terribly so, truth be told. So let that be your first, second, third, fourth – or whatever – lesson of the day. With school-time over, kids, we now bring you some exciting news about Le Cool presents Le Party at the Queen of Hoxton, London. The night will feature a selection of DJs, acts and bands, currently hitting it big on the London scene (and beyond) right NOW. In addition, there will be drink giveaways, live arts, babes and bass. Nice. Playing on the night will be Terence Teh, Tom McCarthy and Alex Stevenson, who together make-up Patchwork Pirates, a DJ collective who have become one of the biggest names on the London circuit. DJ duo Slutty Fringe will complete the DJ bill, following a mega year which saw them play with Little Boots and The Klaxons, as well as support Justice and throw their own East-End rave-up attended by over 800 people! Soul-drenched folk band, Lulu and The Lampshades, are fast becoming big names on the London gig scene, swapping banter and instruments between infectious ditties, for a memorable live experience. Completing the bill will be Tim Ten Yen, who falls into the kind of lounge-pop bracket. His debut album, Everything Beautiful Reminds Me Of You, received blinding reviews last year. Plus, his MySpace credits Simon and Garfunkel live in Central Park as an inspiration, which automatically earns him a double positive from Planet Notion. Today is sending us into a heavy state of lethargy and depression. For one, we spunked £6 on the horses in the hope of spicing up the day. Scenario 1: our horse comes in and we head down the pub, worrying about the inevitable consequences tomorrow. Scenario 2: we lose and feel crap for the remainder of the day, before spunking our money on another horse in the inane hope of regaining funds. Munching Mike didn’t win. We’re as bad at gambling as we are at everything else in life: Like writing, pulling and having just the one drink; being a civilized member of society who drinks in wine bars, dines in fine restaurants and visits galleries wearing a cravat. Still, we have £7 left. Enough for a packet of king-skins, a cold can of lager and a packet of tobacco. And we have some of those little beers indoors, like the Australians drink in the movies. If we were more careful with money, we’d be able to go to the next Twisted Licks event at The Macbeth on June 10th. It’s really good according to certain newspapers of national notoriety. Playing on the night will be James Yuill . He’ll be playing a DJ set. We’ve heard of James but we haven’t heard his music. We’ll add ‘being up-to-date with the latest music’ to the long list of things we’re crap at. We gave his MySpace a listen, though. And we read his biography. Apparently he’s one of the best up-and-comers on the folktronica scene, which is a cross between folk and electro. As a result, James’ music tends to kick off with music that makes people dance like retards (electro), before a nice bit of guitar comes in to accompany James’ vocals (folk). Then the electro kicks back in over the top; hence folktronica. The result is a pleasant head-fuck. Like pulling a whitey while watching previews on the porno channel. Making up the bill will be Run Toto Run . Once again, we’ve heard of them. Once again, we can’t recall ever listening to their music. We do know that they have many fans and that, like James Yuill, they fit into the folktronica bracket. We gave some music on their MySpace a listen and found their sound both pleasant and haunting. Mum’s Shepherd Pie was the same. Looked like something the dog had done; tasted delicious. Finally, Bright Light Bright Light will be there. Here are some facts that we found out about him: 1) The Guardian described him as “a seriously good songwriter”. 2) He’s Welsh. 3) He has appeared at many festivals. To round things off, Twisted Licks will welcome James Day as DJ on the night. Twisted Licks feat. James Yuill Wednesday 10th June The Macbeth, 70 Hoxton Street, London, N1 6LP Tickets: £5 - TicketWeb.Co.UK

Just went to get some coffees. Not the nicest task on a hot day, when you’ve been wedged between a sweaty old man and a hefty woman on the morning train. As we were walking back that thing happened; the last thing a guy wants at 9.37am when damp is rising under his pits and the hairs on his crack are beginning to itch. One of the coffees spilt in our hands! Scolding coffee, trickling down our arm and onto our crotch! The sun was burning, our hands were burning and our brain began to steam. Welcome to the sh*t-stream, baby; buckle yourself in because it’s going to be a rocky ride. Still, the sun is a welcome addition when you’re hitting the festivals. Man and woman, one and all, dressed in next to nothing at all... ROCKNESS One such festival is Rockness, taking place from Friday 12th – Sunday 14th June in the beautiful surroundings of Loch Ness, Scotland. It’s a nice eclectic line-up of dance, indie and rock acts, featuring The Prodigy, Erol Alkan, Orbital, Placebo, Biffy Clyro, Basement Jaxx, Dizzee Rascal and Super Furry Animals. As a break from the norm, Planet Notion is going to bring you our pick of alternative areas to check out if you’re heading to Rockness ’09. SOCO SOCIAL Following a stint on the festival circuit last year, Southern Comfort will bring their New Orleans vibe to Rockness with the return of SoCo Social. SoCo Social will be bringing together the finest acts on the electronic music scene on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the Rockness festival! Lucky you. By day the area will take inspiration from the smoky bars of New Orleans, with added twists to bring it into the new millennia and set the party going. A glow-stick chandelier will hang whilst the dance floor will be surrounded by bespoke wallpaper, decadent mirrors and places to chill and take in the views of Loch Ness. By night, the SoCo Social area will reel in the crowds with projection screens, neon signs and an LED light trail leading to the Loch. Pure party bliss, we’re sure you’ll agree. On Friday the SoCo Social area will welcome a live set from the Dub Pistols, with a Cagedbaby DJ set, Killer Kitsch, Clancy and Giles Locker providing support. Saturday will see Scottish star Mylo take to the decks, a Filthy Dukes live set, Infadels, Alex Metric, Living in a Disco and Firas gracing the SoCo stage. Sunday will round things off with an ultra-rare, ultra-exclusive and ultra-special disco set from LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy and Pat Mahoney. Support will come from Yousef, Leatherhead and Herve. For further information on SoCo Social visit SoCoSocial.Co.UK RIZLA INVISIBLE PLAYERS Like SoCo Social, the Rizla van and its band of Invisible Players graced many a festival last year, proving a popular addition to the circuit. With Graeme Park, Annie Nightingale and Greg Wilson among those to grace the Rizla stage last year, Rizla are stepping things up a gear in 2009 with a new look and bigger arena. Playing from a revamped replica of the original Rizla touring van of the 1920’s, this year’s official Invisible Players and a host of guests will play spontaneous, unplanned sets from their diverse record collections. With Rockness taking place in Scotland, Rizla will feature a Scottish contingent of Invisible players over the three days of the festival, including The Revenge, Beta Band’s Steve Mason and Maelstrom. Friday’s headliner will be a legend of his field, a statement more than befitting of Funky Dread and Soul II Soul founder and OBE, Jazzy B. Support will come from Heavenly Jukebox, Auto Disco and The Revenge. Saturday will welcome Hinterland’s Mike Oman, a Micachu DJ set, Steve Mason, Den Haan, Maelstrom and an Invisible Player from Furry Sounds: a Super Furry Animals DJ set. Finally, Sunday will see David Shrigley, Heavenly Jukebox vs Disco Deviance, Toddla T & MC Serocee, Jon Carter, Riton and Andrew Weatherall grace the Rizla van. Funny old weather at the moment. It looks cold but when we step outside we start heating up, like a grain of perfectly boiling rice. We looked out the window, saw the clouds and put on our jacket to put a four pound bet on the 3pm at Lingfield. Now our armpits are rising damp and, as if to compel our misery, we’re out of deodorant. To make matters worse, this guy in the office keeps burping. He doesn’t stop! He burps about 20 times a day and they absolutely stink! Alongside the stress of rewriting press release after press release and drinking to numb the pain, its little surprise we have a fucked-up sleep pattern. On the subject of our growing insomnia, we bring news on the return of Insomniacs Ball, taking place at Corsica Studios on June 5th. As with previous years, Insomniacs Ball will present an eclectic bill of fresh movers, shakers, bands and DJs, currently spicing things up on the UK live scene. Making the trip will be Wall of Sound’s electro-tinged rockers, Infadels. In their own words: “We can’t wait to take our new material to the Insomniacs Ball crowd and blow the roof off”. Strong stuff! A band currently making waves (excuse the pun) on the Liverpool music scene and beyond, Wave Machines will bring their electro-pop ditties to proceedings. They’ll be joined by the likes of Late of the Pier, American indie-rockers Bear Hands and Mancunian band Everything Everything. We gave Everything Everything’s MySpace page a listen. At first we thought they sounded like a tripped out Future Heads, throwing in the odd guitar riff over electronic back-beats. But to be honest, our brain lacks the capabilities to pin-point their exact sound. We’re pretty clueless on the good and bad of the current music scene but we read on a website that they could be it… We also checked out Chik Budo, a London band whose new-wave synth sounds and sweet vocals sound like the first rush of particularly pleasant high. Making up the live bill will be digital duo, Hook and the Twin. The DJ room will include sets from Dirty Bingo vs Loud and Quiet magazine, Plugs, Offset DJs and Ezra Bang of Ezra Bang and The Hot Machine. Headliners on the night will be thecocknbullkid. For updates, full line-up, comps, news, free downloads, special offers and all that jazz, visit MySpace.Com/InsomniacsBall .
