You are browsing our gig previews, check out whats happening and who's playing.

The train-stations of London are awash with arseholes. Not just the ones between the bum-cheeks of the Capital’s people, but the people themselves. Just because we haven’t shaved for two weeks, our hair is greasy and we stink of ash and booze, doesn’t mean we’re invisible. All we’re doing is staring at the train schedules and listening to Lou Reed’s Transformer, eagerly anticipating the first gulp of a cool, crisp beer. And yet they bang into us as though we’re not there, snarling and tutting and spitting their venom. You know the people we mean. They read broadsheet newspapers and eat sushi; drink rare wines and dine in fine restaurants; go on cruises and masturbate over lady-boys in Ratchaprasong. If you’re searching for a friendlier crowd, look no further than Twisted Licks. You’ve probably read previous Twisted Lick’s previews on Planet Notion. It takes place once a month at The Macbeth in Shoreditch and presents a night of quirky, funky and top drawer music. The next event takes place on May 23rd (BANK HOLIDAY SATURDAY!!!), which means you can get totally wankered, hit the pub next day and not worry about the consequences of work on the Monday… Performing live at Twisted Licks will be Banjo or Freakout. The Italian maestro at the helm of this project seems to be achieving something very rare; namely, making computer generated scuzz accessible to even the most stubborn rock misfits. Lyrically and musically haunting and beautiful, Banjo or Freakout is the sound-track to falling steadily on a come-down; all paranoid visions and unnaturally dead air. Also playing live will be Gyratory System, who grabbed the Sunday Times prize of ‘Leftfield Album of The Year’ back in 2008. Gyratory System sound like the moment you reach a drunken, drug-riddled peak and start the arduous descent straight over it. Which is better to listen to than to experience… Namely because such experiences are rarely remembered next day when you’re peeling kebab meat from your face and prising your tongue from the roof of your mouth. Headline DJs on the night will be 65 Days of Static, whose glitch beats, screaming post-rock guitars and industrial sound collages have earned them countless accolades in the media. Radioproof will also be DJing on the night. Sadly we won’t be going; money problems and that. You probably should go. We hear it’s very good… Twisted Licks Saturday 23rd May 8pm – 2am The Macbeth, 70 Hoxton Street, Shoreditch, N1 6LP Tickets: £6 MySpace.Com/TwistedLicks

Listening to ‘Neil Young: Tonight’s The Night’ at the moment. Something about the album is real depressing, probably because it was written about two mates of Neil’s who died of a heroin overdose. And yet it’s easily Neil’s finest hour. Okay, bold statement; it’s one of Neil’s finest hours and one of the seminal rock albums of all time. Makes you want to drink a quart of whiskey straight from the bottle. It’s the kind of album that makes one think: “There’s more to life than staring at a screen all day, wishing you were somewhere else; shaking your head at the way colleagues work extra hours for no extra pay”. Because caring that much about work just isn’t in the spirit of Tonight’s The Night. Well, it could be. Who knows? If Planet Notion stayed extra hours at work we’d probably be dead of smack overdose by now. A little something totally unrelated to the 9-to-5 (in a really, really good way) is the return of Rizla Invisible Players. For those unaware of the whole ‘Rizla Invisible Players’ shebang, for the last 2 years Rizla has selected a group of creative icons (Invisible Players) to take to the road at clubs and festivals. The Invisible Players play sets direct from a kind of jazzed up Rizla camper van. To prove the quality of the Invisible Players, last year featured a soundtrack from Annie Nightingale, Justin Robertson, Graeme Park and Derrick Carter. The quality this year is set to be no different. Why? Because Jazzie B, John Carter, Micachu, Gruff Rhys and David Shringley will take to decks. Jazzie B, leader of the Soul II Soul empire, is a legendary British DJ and producer whose soul, funk and grooves have even earned him an OBE. Singer/song-writer Micachu is DJ and front woman of fast-rising scuzzy-pop outfit, Micachu and the Shapes. Enough said. Everyone should be aware of Gruff Rhys, founder of the Super Furry’s and more recently, Mercury nominated Neon Neon. Then you’ve got Jon Carter, a DJ and producer involved in the acid house movement, respected across the field. Finally, David Shrigley is notorious for his animations, art, photography and cartoons - which have featured in the likes of The Guardian magazine. But Jon’s also a dab hand on the decks, releasing his debut album on the Azuli label back in 2006, featuring the likes of Liars, Grizzly Bear and Final Fantasy. The 2009 tour kicks off with two Rizla Invisible Players club nights in Bristol (Start The Bus, Friday 29th May) and Manchester (The Deaf Institute, Saturday 6th June) before heading up to Rockness for the first festival on the 12th - 14th June. Lovebox (18th – 19th July), The Big Chill (7th – 9th August) and Bestival (11th – 13th September) complete the festivals. Three more club nights are planned for September to November with a big closing party already being planned. For more information visit rizla.co.uk/invisible-players

Time for a brief history lesson. Like work, we’re aware that lessons are pretty crap, but bear with us. Actually, you could never compare lessons to work. Lessons don’t make you kick your disc-drive, smash a mug and fuck off down the pub at 1pm in the afternoon. Least not when we were at school. But anyway, the history lesson regards a feature we ran on Planet Notion last year about the website Ctrl.Alt.Shift, which aims to engage the social-networking generation onto important global issues. Issue like war + peace, gender + power, and HIV + stigma. The above were issues that Ctrl.Alt.Shift asked aspiring filmmakers, aged between 18 and 25, to explore as part of a national competition last year. In January the winners were announced and they were given the opportunity to bring their ideas to the big screen, complete with a budget, cast and mentoring from the UK’s finest directors – including Kinga Burza, Paul Andrew and Aoife McArdle. The five winners (Joe Patrick & Tim Woodall, Tim Travers Hawkins, Fern Berresford, Ben Newman and Shelia Menon & Alex Monro) will broadcast their films at on Thursday 14th May at Shoreditch Studios, East London. The films, ‘A Thousand Voices’, ‘HIV: The Musical’, ‘Man Made’, ‘No Way Through’ and ‘War School’, feature leading names from UK television and film. They include the Mighty Boosh’s Julian Barratt and the guy who looks like a playmobil man from The Office. Oh, his name is Martin Freeman. Apparently. As well as premiering the five films, the event at Shoreditch Studios will feature performances by various artists who recorded music for the shorts, including The Thirst, Metronomy, Chipmunk, Jesca Hoop and some very special guests. Ctrl.Alt.Shift hopes the event will offer a characteristic platform for key global concerns to be showcased. Tickets for the event are free and can be applied for by visiting CTRLALTSHIFT.Co.UK/WinTickets . Post the premiere the films will be available to download at CTRLALTSHIFT.Co.UK

Feel terrible. Truly terrible. Our head feels like it’s been locked in a vice and we’ve been screwed in the ear with a truncheon; our brain reduced to pulp. We need a boost of some description; we need energy; we need sustenance. We need Red Bull! On the subject of Red Bull, the Red Bull Music Academy will celebrate the launch for 2010 applications by presenting a night with Broadcasting’s Karen P. This time around they’ll present an exclusive collaboration between two of the finest musicians in their respective fields. First-up: The self-professed king of Latin soul: Joe Bataan. We’re currently listening to Joe on MySpace and despite the kidney pains and sore head we’re starting to feel pretty chipper. Little surprise Joe’s sending us into a happy spin; he was one of the pioneers of the disco movement and had the first charting rap-record way back in 1979. Amazingly, it will be the first time Joe has played in the UK, despite launching his career way back in 1966. Joe will join Stones Throws Records’ James Pants for the unique collaboration on June 11th. The multi-instrumentalist and DJ creates a cross-over of 80’s Soul, Electro Boogie, Early Rap, New Wave, Post-Punk Disco and everything in-between. Speaking of the collaboration, James commented: "Joe Bataan has got to be one the most on-point artists in the game, and someone I have a tremendous amount of respect for. “Latin soul, salsa, disco, rap-o-clap-o, lowrider ballads, and funk with a career spanning forty years... How many people can pull that off!? I look forward to busting down some deadly cowbell for this show." No strangers to the RBMA, both James and Joe have been guest-speakers at the Academy, passing their knowledge onto participants and giving them an in-sight into their music. Supporting the pair will be purveyor of soulful Atlanta beats and a unique hip-hop sound, Willie Isz. James Pants and Broadcasting head honcho Karen P will play DJ sets on the night. Isn’t it great when you discover something new? We’re talking about the norm being turned inside-out, offering something totally different to anything that has come before it. This is the case with UnderDrome, taking place at iconic London venue The Roundhouse from Friday 22nd – Sunday 24th May. Branded “AN UNFORGETTABLE PLACE WHERE DANCE, MUSIC AND VIDEO ART COLLIDE”, UnderDrome is the brain-child of Darren Johnson, a choreographer, performer and sound/video artist whose innovative productions have won recognition and awards across Europe. These awards include the International Choreographen Concours in Holland, the first international choreography competition in Borenam, Belgium, and the 2001 Bonnie Bird Choreography Award. And as an example of Darren’s work, look no further than his choreography at the show-stealing Aphex Twin/Chris Cunningham live show at Traffic Festival, Turin. UnderDrome has been created with The Roundhouse in mind, paying homage to the venues architecture and heritage. Darren will bring together 30 dancers, a 100 strong choir and those at the forefront of their respective fields for a truly unique experience. Those involved in the project include visual artist/animator Michael England, plus set designers Gideon Burger and Block 9. And having worked closely with a host of artists in the electronic field, the performance will feature a soundtrack mixed live by Zan Lyons (pictured). As an audio and visual maestro, not to mention a self-taught concerto violinist with an eye on the electronic field, Zan’s productions are internationally renowned. Zan will be melding classic material from Warp Records artists such as Aphex Twin and Squarepusher with a live orchestra; the brilliant London Contemporary Orchestra, for a sound that is best described as audio visual orchestral hardcore. As a 360 degree live experience, UnderDrome will put the audience in the centre of a dark and menacing production where sound and image combine. Put simply, this unique event isn’t to be missed. UNDERDROME Friday 22nd – Sunday 24th May The Roundhouse, Chalk Farm Road, Camden, London, NW1 8EH Tickets: £20 (standing) £18 (conc) Roundhouse.Org.UK

Frustration, frustration, frustration. Frustration, frustration, frustration, frustration. Frustration. More frustration. Frustration times ten. Mother-fucking, tit-sucking frustration. Another day at work. Another day in London. Another day in Britain circa 2009. Eternal misery. The damned stuck in their jobs like flies in a web. The hoodlums throwing bricks through windows and smashing bricks on heads. The jobless. The drunks. The addicts. The damned. We haven’t heard Gallows’ new album, Grey Britain, but judging by the title, we’re guessing that they’re just as pissed-off with the state of affairs in this country as we are. We have seen them live and we have heard their anarchic, full-throttle hardcore-punk debut album, Orchestra of Wolves. Both were brilliant. Plus we often read the Observer Music Monthly, because some guy down the pub buys it, and they gave Gallows’ new album a massive thumbs-up. So it has to be good. It’s the bloody Observer! So we’re delighted to reveal that Gallows will be playing a free gig at Rough Trade East on Bank Holiday Monday. Here are the details: Gallows ‘Grey Britain’ Instore Performance Rough Trade East Monday 4th May 2009 Rough Trade East, Dray Walk, Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, London, E1 6QL Starts 7pm Wrist-band collection 1 hour prior to gig. First come first served basis. One per person.

Guess you could say we’ve been slacking when it comes to gig previews lately. You’d be right. To our credit, we’ve also been snowed under with a lot of mundane bull-shit. Not our thought that running this website is like working in an M&Ms factory, sorting out the bad from the good; the bad pouring and pouring and pouring out, more and more and more, like a severe case of the shits. A never-ending stream of shit that isn’t over when you think it’s over and starts tickling your gut and burning your cheeks within 5 minutes of flushing the chain. Basically, the work here is never ever over. Anyhow, we’ve taken time out from writing about house nights and techno nights and dub-step nights, to bring you news on the next Be-at-Proud event on May 2nd, which will welcome 2 live acts and a guest DJ set. That’s on top of all the usual disco, indie and electro bangers from DJs David H and John Power. Not to mention the fun and games of The Non-Stop Electric Cabaret, with burlesque action from Miss Vicky Butterfly and friends and music from DJ Bioux. Anyhoo, first of the live acts on May 2nd will be Detachments. Not knowing a lot about them, we checked out their MySpace. From what we can gather they merge live electronics with various lyrics to deliver a sound-track like a chase scene in a 1980s b-movie. It’s also pretty good for getting off your tits to. Attack Switch Attack are a kind of disco-punk type outfit, apparently. We hear they’re pretty good and that one lives above a curry house and two live above a pub. Lucky bastards. We didn’t have time to listen to them because we’ve got too much shit to do. Finally, C90s will be DJing. It’ll be their second time in as many months at Be, so we trust they're pretty good at delivering their post-punk, disco, electro beats. BE AT PROUD Saturday 2nd May 8pm – 2.30am Proud Galleries, Horse Hospital, Stables Market, Camden, NW1 8AH Tickets: £10 Be-at-Proud.Co.UK

We just suggested that the office look through our music collection after a debate on what we should put on the stereo. Having been listening to Love’s 1966 debut album on our headphones and being particularly fond of Arthur Lee’s ‘A Message To Pretty’, which is the perfect soundtrack to a lonely day in bed, drinking whiskey neat, smoking cigarettes and wondering where it all went wrong in a come-down haze, we were of the opinion that we have an impeccable taste in music. But apparently: “NOBODY WANTS TO LISTEN TO [OUR] HILL-BILLY SHIT!” Bastards. However, one thing we almost universally agree on here at Planet Notion is that The Phantom Band’s debut album, Checkmate Savage, has been one of the highlights of 2009. Maybe it’s because you don’t know which way things are going to go from one track to the next. Maybe it’s because we love that element of surprise. Maybe it’s because they’re actually making electronic sounds accessible to people stuck in the golden age of music by combining them with trippy tribal drum-beats and riffs. Who knows? We do know that the Scottish experimentalists are touring the UK from May 15th –August 22nd and that they’re releasing new single ‘The Howling’ on May 26th. The other day we posted a news story regarding the Jack Daniel’s JD Set tour schedule for May. Because we’re really lazy, we didn’t post any information on the acts that will be performing. So we decided to listen to a track on each act’s MySpace page and write our first impressions of them. Here are the results: JD SET at SPRING & AIRBRAKE (Belfast) on THURSDAY 7th MAY DAN BLACK (pictured): Firstly, what’s with the background on this guy’s page? It’s like a sketch of some guy with a massive cock on his head, jumping up and down. Repeatedly! Dan sounds a bit like Thom Yorke, only more up-beat and with an electro vibe, meaning you’ll probably dance around a bit instead of hacking your eyes out with a potato peeler. Myspace.Com/DanBlackSound TWO DOOR CINEMA CLUB: Decided to listen to a track called Cigarettes in the Theatre. They’ve kind of got this fast-paced guitar thing going down that makes you think they’re ROCK. But then they use an electronic drum machine that makes them sound more POP. End of story. MySpace.Com/TwoDoorCinemaClub JD SET at ABC2 (Glasgow) on FRIDAY 8th MAY HATCHAM SOCIAL: Hatcham Social has this whole 80s Cure thing going down. It’s the kind of music you could happily trip your nuts off to alone, in order to forget whatever woes are fucking your crippled psyche. It’s also the kind of music you could sporadically dance to in a club somewhere, surrounded by loads of people. Music for the best of times and the worst of times. MySpace.Com/HatchamSocial EUGENE McGUINESS: “Did you drop a clanger?” Um, yes. “A spanner in the works?” Um, yes. “Did it all pour out the wrong way?” Um, what? The above are questions Eugene asks us in a song called Moscow State Circus, followed by our responses. He then goes on to tell us to forget about the clanger and the spanner and get over it. Great advice. Cheers Eugene, you’re a star. MySpace.Com/EugeneMcGuinness85 We’ll have more JD Sets previews next week. Until then, here are the ticket details. Spring & Airbrake (Belfast) tickets: £9 ( GetUrTicket.Com ) ABC2 (Glasgow) tickets: £8 ( TicketMaster.Co.UK )
