TOUR STARTS APRIL 19: Tour SUgly Duckling are one of hip hop’s greatest unknown pleasures, being perhaps the finest exponents of party cuts you could ever hope to get your groove on to. Comparisons with De La Soul circa ‘Three Feet High And Rising’ have followed this Long Beach based trio wherever they have gone, but that is to miss much of their magic. Their satirical take on modern American culture and politics will have you grinning as much as their heavy funk and heavier rapping will have you whooping it up with pleasure. Ugly Duckling are purveyors of pure classic hip hop, and that is, of course, relentlessly energetic and inventive. Do yourself a favour and let these Californians show you how it’s done. APRIL 19th - Academy, Manchester 20th - The Plug, Sheffield 21st - Bongo Club, Edinburgh 22nd - Classic Grand, Glasgow 24th - Ryde Theatre, Isle Of Wight 25th - Bath Moles 26th - Mean Fiddler, London 27th - Consortium, Bournemouth 28th - Fiddlers, Bristol

APRIL 19/20: One of the strangest experiences of my 2006 was standing in a crowded bar in Camden at 5pm watching Wolfmother play to about 200 people, while outside people queued up for the bus home after work. It was the beginning of the Camden Crawl, undoubtedly one of the highlights of the year for those who like their concert-going to be intense and compacted. This year sees the event expanding to a second day, so expect two lots of 12 hour stints of some of the finest music you’re likely to hear all year. At the time of going to press, line-ups were still to be announced, but be warned, you ignore this inner-city festival at your peril. With 80 bands playing at 15 venues all within walking distance of each other, expect much mayhem and some revelatory sets that will start to crystallise the movers and shakers for the coming year. Our only advice to you is to wear sensible shoes. APRIL 19th+20th - Various Venues Camden, London. Go to www.thecamdencrawl.com for more info . Text: Karl O'Keefe

TOUR STARTS APRIL 3: Some musicians are simply too cool for school. They make the rest of the musicians out there look like miserably pathetic try-hards. Take Terry Callier for example. The man has a voice like molten chocolate being filtered through silk sheets into a martini glass by Audrey Hepburn. The man oozes sensuality and sophistication from every perfectly nuanced note he sings. Signed to the formidable Chess Records early on his career, the man pioneered the folk-jazz sound and created a genre defining record,‘What Color Is Love?’ in 1973. He went on to become a cult figure for a new generation of artists in the 90s. Working with the likes of Beth Orton, Koop, 4Hero, and more recently Massive Attack, Terry Callier is the bedrock upon which much of the more laidback grooves that came from this country since the mid-nineties have been built. Take the opportunity to catch him on this tour and increase your musical credibility in the eyes of your friends. Just don’t wear a roll neck if you do manage to bag yourself a ticket. APRIL 3rd - The Mint Lounge, Manchester 12th - Komedia, Brighton 13th - Jazz Cafe, London 14th - Jazz Cafe, London 15th - TBC, Isle Of Wight Text: Karl O’Keefe

If one phrase is likely to bring most music fans out in hives it's the deplorable marketing-speak of 'chill-out.' What precisely does that mean? Music to relax / fall comatose to? Surely all music, be it banging house or Debussy, is designed to help the listener relax. 'Chill-out' sounds are a way for record companies to extract cash from accountants and actuaries desperately wanting to feel that they haven't lost their cool. Well, you probably never had it and you’re ruining the reputation of top acts like Air. Please desist and stay in the office so that we can all go see an outfit who defined what ambient music and celestial melodiousness could achieve. Synths and computers never sound as understanding as when in the hands of these French maestros, so ignore the labels and prepare to be amazed at how they expand on the studio magnificence with their full on live show. SHOWS START MARCH 14: Sweet Jesus in a jumpsuit, has a better band come tearing across the Atlantic in recent years than Arcade Fire? The audacity, the epicness, the sheer power of what they do has left many bands scratching their heads as they realise that the bar has been monumentally raised by this outfit that blew so many people away with debut 'Funeral.' Combining some thundering rock orchestrations with the type of euphoric melodies and dynamics normally to be found in more gurn-friendly clubs, the group of multi-instrumentalists project an aura of magic and majesty - even in their darker, more mysterious moments - that will no doubt turn every venue they take over into their own malleable plaything. Abandon your will and place your senses in their hands as they showcase material from their forthcoming album 'Neon Bible.' Text: Karl O'Keefe MARCH 14th - 17th - Brixton Academy, London

TOUR STARTS MARCH 2: I'm a great believer in the old adage that you can fool some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time. How else can the dominance of bands like the Kaiser Chiefs be explained? Admittedly, they released some cracking singles, but a few good songs doth not a great band make. Furthermore, when compared to the better bands that came out at the same time as them a couple of years ago, they did seem to be little more than the cabaret crowd pleasers. It did make for an entertaining gig at the time, but it doesn't necessarily indicate longevity. Still, I get the feeling that they shall be rumbled on the release of their second album. Besides, if they do stay around too long, more people might begin to become suspicious at the fact that Ricky Wilson seems to have been hovering around the 28 years old mark for a while now..... MARCH 2nd - 4th - Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London 6th - Academy, Glasgow 7th - Academy, Glasgow 9th - Cardiff University Great Hall, Cardiff 10th - Cardiff University Great Hall, Cardiff 30th - Royal Albert Hall, London Words: Karl O'Keefe
