Ever had one of those days where you wake-up and think: “WE HAD A GOOD INNINGS OLD BOY AND WE’VE SERVED EACH OTHER WELL, BUT I FEAR IT’S TIME FOR OUR LAST FAREWELL.” Then your brain conks out and you can’t think straight and you’ve got a bastard behind the eyes and you’re shivering like a smack-addict doing 8 years bird… If you’ve ever had that feeling, you’ve probably had a ruddy mad night at Be@Proud, and those nights just keep on getting better. I heard Toob on MySpace. They made me do strange motions with my hands, like I’d just come out the womb or something; looking around in total bewilderment at everyone and everything, eager to study the world and find out what causes pain and what causes fear and what causes happiness and glee; knowing that one day I’ll feel it all in abundance. Suddenly the music picked up and I found myself bobbing my head from side to side like I was watching a game of tennis or a squirrel chasing a cat. Then I accidentally knocked a coffee mug off my desk and tried to disguise the stain with an empty paper bag from Greggs the bakers. Toob are a seriously good little outfit, who can drift from more subtle beats to a fusion of funk-punk and minimal. I hate minimal house and stuff, but Toob shit all over it continuously until it lays there, exposed for the stinking, smelling, fly-ridden pile of goop it really is. EXCELLENT! Ah, Magic Arm. Happy music! Seriously happy music! We all need a big, healthy dose of lovely gorgeous happiness. Happiness that makes you float around like you’re in a big bubble, smiling like the Cheshire Cat and pointing at all the little pixie people and the Yorkshire terriers and - look - look there, it’s the Krankies playing ring-a-ring-a-roses. Then suddenly the bubble bursts, things go a bit mental, and you crash; just like in mid-week following a particularly heavy weekend, when you snorted that yellow shit and thought a Satsuma was a rat trying to rape an apple. But get this; despite all the different sounds you hear coming from Magic Arm, he’s a one man show. Magic Arm uses peddles and gadgets and stuff to create these funky soundscapes. The guy is literally magic. If you asked him to turn you into a ham roll, I’m betting he could do it. Think electro/folk/pop with lashings of Beck. Finally, or should that be “LAST, BUT BY NO MEANS LEAST,” We Have Band will be taking to Camden’s Proud Galleries. The media’s going fucking crazy about this London three-piece, who’ve only been doing their thing for a year. I guess it’s kind of like Girls Aloud and the X-Factor, except it’s not like that at all because their music is completely different and they’re not a manufactured band. Plus they write their own stuff, catchy electro-pop and dark scuzzy disco-rock. I’m not a mover or a shaker; when I dance the girls flee and the men laugh and I smile, an awkward smile, but carry on regardless because I’m strong in the face of adversity. Sometimes. Except that time a guy kicked me in the shin; I had a bruise for a week and walked like I’d shat my pants. But who cares, I’d happily go through it all again when seeing We Have Band, because they’re scuzzy electro-rock-disco, is as infectious as the clap in a Brixton massage parlour. Top drawer! And as is customary at Be@Proud, resident DJs David H, John Power and Clemence Lachance will be mind-fucking your left and right ears with a groove-gherkin, whilst resident VJ Hagpop Matossian feeds your eyes with some seriously wigged-out 3D visuals. In the South Gallery, some titillating burlesque, courtesy of Miss Vicky Butterfly and co, will get tongues wagging to the sound of the Rock n’ Roll Jukebox. O god! Death has one hand on my shoulder and is buggering me senseless with his big stick. A sign should a sign be needed that I’m back in the office with a stinking hangover, on a stinking comedown; money troubles and woe pouring from my arsehole like the Saturday morning runs. Alas, money is the only reason I won’t be going to Twisted Licks at the Last Days of Decadence on November 7th; for that I weep onto my keyboard, big strapping tears of sorrow and pain and work and lost love and life… O brutal, brutal life. Alas, you might be lucky enough to have money to spend having a whale of a time whilst I reflect on spending too much money too soon; staring vacantly at whatever show has taken the allocated time slot from Fwiday Night With Jonathon Woss and chain-smoking Cutters Choice; drinking cheap whiskey and eating green bread. Hell, with this Twisted Licks line-up it’s dead easy to see why The Guardian rates it among the Top Ten nights on London’s gigging circuit. Here’s a run-down of who’s going to be there in no more than a few hundred words: Parisian band Underground Railroad will be there. Their music ranges from foggy rock to acid-trip post-punk. A.Human are a kind of electro-rock hybrid who fuck you in the ears and blur your mind. Then there’s My Tiger My Timing with sweet-sounding pop that’ll have you waggling your imaginary breasts about; unless you’re a girl of course, in which case you’ll just wiggle your breasts about anyway. The Long Blondes may have called it a day, but front-woman Kate Jackso n is still going to bless attendees with a 90 minute DJ set of her choice vinyl tracks. Hacienda legend Dave Haslam will be DJing, with Gigwise’s Dan Melia playing an indie set and Twisted resident Lucia Licks spinning her lovely yarn. Yum! So there we have it. Go there, enjoy yourselves, and raise a toast to me whilst you dance a merry dance with merry people, to merry music and merry times and general merriment… you lucky bastards. Why are people so excited about Halloween, what’s the deal there? “Hey, hey, what are you doing on Halloween, there’s this really good night going on and it’s going to be absolutely crazy and yada-yada-yada-blah-blah-blah” their voices fades away like shit in a flushed toilet. I want to scream “I DON’T CARE!” Hand me a bottle of whiskey and a copy of Hustler and I’ll be a happy man. Anyway, Be@Proud takes place on Saturday and it shits all over Halloween. Here’s the line-up: Acoustic Ladyland sound pretty whacked out. It’s what I’d call happy jazz, which beats a happy slap. Then it goes from the whole happy jazz thing to something more like a happy slap. You start thinking “Am I happy or do I have a sore face?” One minute Acoustic Ladyland will play a whole track of nice chilled jazz, and the next they’ll launch into a nice jazz number that suddenly drifts into a punk-rock type theme. It’s like meeting a girl who turns out to be the best ride you’ve ever had, and waking the next morning to find she’s chopped your balls off and hooked them on the Christmas tree. What a band! They also have scores of celebrity fans, are adored by the majority of music critics, and release their fourth album very, very soon. I didn’t know a single thing about Mercy Arms. That’s why we have things like press releases and MySpace. I figured I’d forget the press release, and skip to the MySpace. This was my initial impression on hearing the Mercy Arms song ‘On and On’: I feel like I’m acting in a movie and I’m crossing a barren desert. Nothing there except a camel’s skull and a few cacti (plus cameramen). When this section of the film is shown in cinemas, it shows me battling my way through the desert in slow-motion, the music playing, and then – the vocals start! People are moved and women are crying, Bette Midler and Dannii Minogue are crying! Then, on my hands and knees, I reach a large lake where people dance and sing-songs and everyone lives happily ever after as the song reaches a dramatic climax. That’s the impression I got from that particular song. Other Mercy Arms songs are more whimsical affairs, demonstrating the scope of the Australian bands rock/pop sound. Finally, The Lovely Jonjo returns to Be@Proud for another DJ set. I’ve never heard any of the Lovely Jonjo’s music, he didn’t have any on his MySpace and the press release wouldn’t open! God obviously took a dump on my day. All I do know is that Erol Alkan was such a keen admirer he made Jonjo a regular of his club-night at The End. This time round, Be@Proud are introducing some burlesque performances and a few other surprises, so Vaseline and Kleenex at the ready. Plus resident DJs David H,John Powerand Clemence Lachance will be spinning their shit, and resident VJ Hagpop Matossian will be pissing rainbows in your eyes. Sometimes you lose something and it breaks your heart. And then suddenly you find it again, months later – maybe years, and you’re like: “Man, I never realised quite how much I loved you until I found you under the sofa next to that dead mouse and a half eaten ham sandwich.” And that love is stronger than ever before. Plus, you discover what that god damn smell was that made you gag every time you sat down to listen to Black and Blue; so, you know, double bonus. The Break was kind of an institution in Shoreditch. Not only did it introduce revelers to new bands and DJs, but it took place at the Comedy Café in Rivington Street. This means it was a pretty unique event, plus the music ranged from rock and indie to electro and hip-hop, so it was a pretty eclectic affair. Jesus, why am I speaking in the past tense? The Break is back! Described as “like a party at a friend's house with all your mates in bands providing the music”, the night returns on November 7th, raising funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust in the process. Headlining the November event will be London five-piece The Metros, who sing about the grim realities of life in the smoke; the East End gangsters and getting leathered on a tenner, that kind of thing; all delivered with witty lyricism in a punk-rockabilly kinda way. Joining The Metros will be 1965 Records’ Rum Shebeen, who deliver a kinda gypsy-soul sound guaranteed to get rumps a-shaking; post-punk band The Pepys; Yorkshire four-piece The Runaway Sons; bluegrass tinged The Cedars; and 2008 XFM Uploaded Competition winners, Five Working Days. It being a comedy venue, Comedy Café regular, Rich Wilson will introduce the bands, whilst 1965 Records’ Raf Rundell will DJ between and after the bands have wrapped up. And so Planet Notion returns for another week. Another week of mid-week comedowns and trapped nerves (back); of headaches and buses and packed trains; your face buried in the hair of an old lady and that unmistakable stench of lavender, stale biscuits and imminent death, breaking through to the other side. O what misery – misery, everywhere misery. Work is misery; travel is misery. Weather is misery and my bodily defect is misery. Everything is misery… except of course, Be@Proud. Once again Planet Notion guides you through what you can expect to see at Be@Proud. We kick-off with S.C.U.M. As I write I listen to them for the first time on MySpace. Here are my thoughts: Strange… something’s brewing, I can feel it in my bones, from fingers to toes. The music’s getting faster, like a bull spotting red – it’s running now – speed growing! O my God I’m going to climax – enter drums; drums, beautiful brooding drums, and vocals like the spirit of Ian Curtis. It’s miserable and reeks of doom… yet beautiful and happy all at once. It’s all in the build-up; you know something’s coming soon, soon, soon the drums are getting faster and - BY GOD MAN! Here we go, I’m like an 80s new-wave kid in a smack-den, wandering aimlessly about and - look, now I’m having a dance-off with a guy whose eyes are rolling so far back into his head they’re staring out his arsehole. WONDERFUL! So yeah, thumbs up for S.C.U.M… Next-up, Lord Auch. Same thing. I’ll listen and I’ll write. Here are my thoughts: Okay, I’m getting a kinda Arcade Fire type vocal thing going on, only a bit more - WOAH! Hold-up there, this kind of reminds me of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly . I’m thinking Ennio Morricone and the man with no name; shootings at midnight in the desert wilderness and 2am flings with floosies in cow-sheds. Yes, I like this. But they’re not Arcade Fire, and despite the song I’m listening to (Wil O the Wisp) bearing similarities, they’re a far more foot-stomping, rock affair… Plus the drummer and singer used to be in art-rock legends Black Wire, and the guitarist used to play in Courtney Love’s band, so they’re obviously pretty tasty and I should probably end things there… Finally, the Sexbeat DJs will Be@Proud for Be@proud. Same thing… Here are my thoughts: I haven’t heard them but, from what I can gather, they’re a DIY collective who have graced stages with the great and the good and have played deep in the heart of London’s dingy underbelly. They play everything from Fucked Up to the Ronettes and everything from 80s Hardcore to US Indie. Sounds insane in the membrane, I’m going insane are you going insane? O and Be resident DJ David H will be laying down some tunes, whilst resident VJ Hagpop Matossian sends your eyes into dreamland, where the wolves hold tea-parties for the mice and the mice say “chin-chin”, and raise a toast to the worms… Be@Proud Saturday 25th October Proud Galleries, Horse Hospital Stables Market, Camden NW1 8AH 8pm – 2.30am Tickets: £5 (before 9) £8 (adv) £10 www.be-at.co.uk

Nothing quite like a tumbler of Jack Daniel’s ol’ Tennessee Whiskey to warm the cockles on a cold autumn day. Course it helps that you can carry it outside without it freezing into an alcoholic Slush Puppy. O the joys of Science… That said, if you started drinking from the bottle at a bus-stop or on a park bench or something, you’d probably get some funny looks, especially from the elderly. No; if you’re cold and you like your JD, Planet Notion recommends going to one of five venues the JD Set will be hitting in November. The now legendary JD Set’s invite bands and stuff – some young and some renowned, to perform with legendary musicians, making for a unique musical experience. For the bands it’s an exciting opportunity to perform with a musician they probably admired, and who probably inspired. For those in attendance it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a top-notch collaboration. Previously, Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook has taken to the JD Sets, playing with everyone from The Wombats to The Subways. The legendary bassist described it as: “A memory that will live with me forever” and commented that “It gave me my spirit back!” In a nut-shell, Hooky thought it was the dog’s dangly bits. Course this time round the scales of greatness are no different. Invited along for each of the five JD Sets is Stranglers singer and guitarist, Hugh Cornwell, one of the all time legends of the post-punk scene. Cornwell will be collaborating with the likes of the Paddingtons and the Shortwave Set over the five-day period. If you’ve never heard the Shortwave Set, they sound like prancing around a field; naked, high on acid and “At one with the world, man”… only with basslines and shizzle in the background. All in all, pretty fucking good. Other highlights over the five nights include The Hours, a seven-piece band from Sheffield who have previously supported Oasis. They’ll be supported by Fox Clubs on the night and… balls to it! Rather than going through every single act and every single night like a hamster in a wheel, we’ll list all of them alongside their prospective dates: 6th Nov: The Hours, Fox Cubs: The Luminaire, London 7th Nov: Shortwave Set, Joy Formidable, The Hosts: Night and Day, Manchester 8th Nov: Paddington’s, Les Gars: Spring & Airbrake, Belfast 11th Nov: Art Brut, Rosie & the Goldbug: ABC2, Glasgow 13th Nov: Sam Isaac, Fight Like Apes: The Cluny, Newcastle There, that was simple. When Shakespeare said “To be or not to be” was he talking about a pencil? I’ve got this theory that he wasn’t talking about a pencil at all. I’ve got a theory that he really liked Be@Proud, but one Saturday he’d made a promise to write some prose or take a lady-friend to the cinema or something. The problem of what to do was really dwelling on his mind, our Shakespeare, and he was thinking “Shall I go, shall I go to the cinema? Where the devil will I go? To Be or not to Be, that is the question”. Of course, I know I’m a slightly strange chap, but I don’t actually believe that Shakespeare could go to the cinema or Be@Proud or anything like that because, well, he died in 1616. It was just a sad means of introducing the next fantastic night of music and shenanigans at Be@Proud. And anyway, even the dimmest person knows that Shakespeare was talking about a pencil… First-up on the night we’ve got Panico. The name sounds like building brick toy manufacturer, but they sound like a Klaxons/Primal Scream hybrid if they were Chilean and buzzing on some proper powerful Doves or something. It’s fuzzy garage-rock electro; it’s “let’s shake our bandy legs like we’re having an orgasmic fit of euphoria”; its Chico if he wasn’t a gormless nomad and wrote more than one decent song (I liked Chico Time); it’s all these things and more, more, MORE!!!!!! Next-up, The Coast. If you like skew-whiff Indie-pop that can carry you on a journey from fairly happy dancing guy, to chatting up a buxom blonde guy, to sitting on the floor and holding back the tears in the corner all by himself guy, then you’ll probably like this four-piece from Toronto. They’re highly anticipated debut album, Expatriate, was released back in April and big things are expected of The Coast in 2009. And so we near the end of this here preview. But don’t cry, baby, we’re not quite finished yet. If you’re a hot-blooded male, remember to take your bumper jar of Gaviscon to Be@Proud. Finnish trio Le Corps Mince de Francoise are sure to send heart-rates pummelling through the roof. I spat in my hand and began to unbutton my ropey jeans when I saw a picture, but someone in the office caught me. But boy, oh boy is that image stored in the reference bank. Le Corps Mince de Francoise will bring out the inner dancer in everyone. They’ve got it all; funky electro-pop; stunning good looks; and lyrics about Ray-Bans. WHOO! Finally, Be residents David H, John Power and Clemence Lachance will be on hand for some late night and early hours DJ madness, whilst VJ Hagpop Matossian will return with some “proper crazy visuals, man!” Be@Proud Saturday 18th October Proud Galleries, Horse Hospital Stables Market, Camden NW1 8AH 8pm – 2.30am Tickets: £5 (before 9) £8 (adv) £10 www.be-at.co.uk

A new pub is opening. Hoorah! Just when Planet Notion was thinking that dodgy licensing laws and the smoking ban and the credit crunch were forcing the Great British boozer to go the way of the wind, we’re presented with The Black Sheep, a Gastro Pub in Brick Lane, London. Sadly it’s only temporary, so don’t go spunking your pants just yet. The Black Sheep will reside at The Truman Brewery to mark the release of mobile phone maker, Palm Europe LTD’s brand new Treo Pro Smartphone. More on the phone later, first, what you can expect from The Black Sheep from October 13th – 17th, whilst it’s open. The gastro pub will welcome an ‘audience with’ night for each day its open, with food being served up by Michelin starred and head-chef of The Ledbury in Notting Hill, Brett Graham. The guest stars for each day will represent those that go against the grain; those that like to do things in their own unique way… even if some of the people (Piers Morgan) are the kind of people you love to hate and love all the more for the hate of it. Alas, we’re a music site (predominantly), so we’ll let you know the exciting news first. Synth-pop pioneers and all-round darlings of the 80s, Human League will be performing a one-off show on Tuesday 14th. The band tasted success with 1981 album Dare!, which reached the number 1 spot alongside the hit single Don’t You Want Me Baby. The track is still as popular now as it was then, receiving regular airplay and consistently played in suburban clubs the country over. Alas, here’s a run-down of the other guys and gals taking to The Black Sheep: Monday – Piers Morgan (former editor of News of the World and Daily Mirror) Tuesday – Human League (As above) Wednesday – Karren Brady (CEO of Birmingham City FC and newspaper columnist) Thursday – Primetime comedian (Details are sketchy…) Friday – Beijing GB Gold Medalist (Ditto) The Black Sheep October 13th – 17th Old Truman Brewery 91 Brick Lane London , E1 6QL Users of the Treo™ Pro smartphone can quickly respond to business and personal email, access the web, stay on top of appointments and contacts, and use Wi-Fi or GPS on the go. Treo™ Pro’s thin design blends a flush, high-resolution colour touch screen and a full QWERTY keyboard with a removable battery that packs up to five hours of talk time. Been having one of those weeks where I get all philosophical and wonder just how vast the Universe is and question what I’m doing with my life and shit. Thing is, it isn’t even a come-down. I mean, I was only drinking heavily this weekend, nothing major. 50 hours was all. Still, I think I’m over the booze demons. I think the last of their haunting was when the Fox started mauling my shoulder and mum rushed in, shook me and told me it was: “Just a dream, son; just a dream”. I think this dark, gloomy depression must be God’s way of saying: “YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE TO BE@PROUD, YOU FOOL” or “YOU SHOULD GO TO BE@PROUD THIS WEEKEND, YOU NUMPTY!” Well, something like that. Hell, one look at the line-up and I make the big man right. Yet again Be@Proud has pulled out all the stops. First-up we’ve got one of the finest remix DJs to emerge from the ol’ – “ eels, pies, saveloys and trotters” – East End of London. I refer of course to Radio1’s newest DJ, Kissy Sell Out. The anticipation for Kissy’s debut album has been huge since he started on the London circuit - before taking the whole ruddy nation by storm! The Graphic Design graduate’s talents have earned him accolades from some of the industries finest. Little surprise; Kissy’s sound is fresher than a spring daisy and sicker than Pat Butcher doing a curry-dump in a shallow puddle. Supporting Kissy Sell Out will be near neighbours the Rogues, who are the equivalent of a very heavy day and night and week on the tiles, skipping from venue to venue and pub to pub and not quite knowing if you’ll be faced with some funky electro beats or some good ol’ fashioned pub-pop fodder. Hailing from Harrow, Rogues have only played a few gigs together, already garnering a reputation and a string of live dates under their belts. Fresh on the American scene, James Pants has been turning heads with his friggin-far-out-sound, man. Pants’ tunes are far from his namesake, his beats dripping with everything from new wave and R&B to post-punk disco. Hip-hop’s newest big-name, Dels, will also be making the trip to Camden. The 23-year-old has already been signed to hip London label, Moshi Moshi and is set to release an album with Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard early next year. O and lest we forget, Be resident DJ, David H and resident VJ ,(the fabulously named) Hagpop Matossian, will be on hand for another dose of bad-arse beats and mind-fucking visual displays. PHEW! Got there eventually. And if that bloody fox creeps up on my dreams again and starts munching my shoulder or my cock or something, I’m going to kick him right out the window – smashed glass or no smashed glass , because there’s no way I’m missing this one… Be@Proud Saturday 11th October Proud Galleries, Horse Hospital Stables Market, Camden NW1 8AH 8pm – 2.30am Tickets: £5 (before 9) £8 (adv) £10 www.be-at.co.uk
