Red Eyed and Blue with David Thomas Broughton, The Wilmington, May 13th
22/04/2008
Red Eyed and Blue returns on May 13th. It’s a suitable name when you consider the philosophy of music behind the night. It’s akin to an acid trip with the good, the bad, and the damn right freaky bouncing around the inner psyche like a beach ball made of lead.

Red Eyed and Blue’s roots are deep-set in Americana, folk, bluegrass, and occasionally mild psychedlica. May 13th will feature a performance by David Thomas Broughton whose hazy African-American beats and gospel-blues delivery will leave you mesmerized. Quite literally. It’s akin to a poetry reading - Greenwich Village circa ’62 - but with beautiful music to the rhythm of the lyrics as opposed to lyrics to the rhythm of the music. Basically, it’s great!

Mumford & Sons bring something a little less bizarre to the table. Straight forward bluegrass and gospel tinged country-folk that reminds you of The Little House on the Prairie; only way cooler and with English accents. Regardless, they’re the kind of band that’ll put modern country back on the map. YEE-HAW and all that jazz…

If the blend of trippy Americana and country-folk is a little hard to digest, find solace in Davie Fiddle and The Lucky Egg’s old fashioned folk-rock (with a modern twist). It’s not ideal if you’ve broken-up with your partner of five years, she’s ran off with your best mate and told everyone your flaccid. We’re not going to lie, chances are Davie Fiddle and The Lucky Egg will send you crying into your umpteenth pint. But hey, who said sad had to be bad? These are powerful tear-jerkers that go beyond Snow Patrol and bloody Coldplay and come out the other side being… well… ROCK! Albeit folk-rock.

Finally, resident DJs ‘Truckin’ Lauras’ will be taking to the decks to get groins a-shaking and hands a-pumping with their substantial collection of rockin’ Americana. So, if you have been dumped by your ex, and he/she has run off with your best mate and exposed lurid details of your poor performance in the sack, then this could be just the ticket for your libido. Besides, it makes a damn good change from all the other spiel!
