Shantel and the Bucovina Club Orkestra Live + Shantel DJ set
13/12/2007
Who needs pills when you’ve got the music of Shantel and the Bucovina Club Orkestar? Music that gives a subliminal sense of euphoria; where all inner demons, self-loathing and hate is tossed aside like a rotten banana, making way for a harmonious celebration of heavenly proportions.

Yes indeed, Shantel et al will be hitting the mighty Koko next year, a date to put in one of the many diaries you may receive as a Crimbo prezzie: Wednesday 20th February. I’ve already put it in the one I bought for Uncle Bobby (lucky bugger getting two gifts rolled into one). With an eclectic mix of South-European and Balkan music, thrown into a melting pot of club-friendly electronica, this Koko gig is one party not to miss.

In many ways Shantel is viewed as a pioneer of Balkan-electro, the first to cross over the threshold with such a sound and inspire DJs worldwide to embrace his euphoric ‘new’ sound. It’s a hybrid of Gypsy rhythm and Western music, R & B meets the Romanian beat of Dubstar Bugarskji. In a word: unique. Gogol Bordello anyone?

It’s music that throws you into a completely different world - a galaxy alien to us all, yet only a plane ticket away. Disko Partiziani, Shantel and the Bucovina Club Orkestra’s last album witnessed Shantel’s talents as producer come DJ come musician brought forth like a stampede of hobos to a fag-butt. A particular album highlight is Sota, carried through with ska rhythms courtesy of Shantel’s guitar before erupting into a chorus that puts you smack-bang in the middle of a gypsy-campfire and subsequent debauchery.

Then there’s Diskoboy, another treat one can expect at Koko; a tale that takes you to the realms of a seedy European club, trying diligently to get your hole or get your pole before the night is through. The terrific aspect of Shantel’s KOKO gig is that you’ll also be treated to a DJ set from the man himself, and there’s the promise of new material from the gypsy-electro maestros.

Balls to it - I’m tempted to get buy family the doubly joyful gift of diary plus tickets for aforementioned date! February 20th: music, debauchery and unadulterated fun. Tick.
