Today is sending us into a heavy state of lethargy and depression. For one, we spunked £6 on the horses in the hope of spicing up the day.
Scenario 1: our horse comes in and we head down the pub, worrying about the inevitable consequences tomorrow.
Scenario 2: we lose and feel crap for the remainder of the day, before spunking our money on another horse in the inane hope of regaining funds.
Munching Mike didn’t win. We’re as bad at gambling as we are at everything else in life:
Like writing, pulling and having just the one drink; being a civilized member of society who drinks in wine bars, dines in fine restaurants and visits galleries wearing a cravat.
Still, we have £7 left. Enough for a packet of king-skins, a cold can of lager and a packet of tobacco. And we have some of those little beers indoors, like the Australians drink in the movies.
If we were more careful with money, we’d be able to go to the next Twisted Licks event at The Macbeth on June 10th. It’s really good according to certain newspapers of national notoriety.
Playing on the night will be James Yuill. He’ll be playing a DJ set.
We’ve heard of James but we haven’t heard his music. We’ll add ‘being up-to-date with the latest music’ to the long list of things we’re crap at.
We gave his MySpace a listen, though. And we read his biography. Apparently he’s one of the best up-and-comers on the folktronica scene, which is a cross between folk and electro.
As a result, James’ music tends to kick off with music that makes people dance like retards (electro), before a nice bit of guitar comes in to accompany James’ vocals (folk).
Then the electro kicks back in over the top; hence folktronica. The result is a pleasant head-fuck. Like pulling a whitey while watching previews on the porno channel.
Once again, we’ve heard of them. Once again, we can’t recall ever listening to their music. We do know that they have many fans and that, like James Yuill, they fit into the folktronica bracket.
We gave some music on their MySpace a listen and found their sound both pleasant and haunting. Mum’s Shepherd Pie was the same. Looked like something the dog had done; tasted delicious.
1) The Guardian described him as “a seriously good songwriter”.
2) He’s Welsh.
3) He has appeared at many festivals.
To round things off, Twisted Licks will welcome James Day as DJ on the night.
