Wax:On LIVE festival with PRIMAL SCREAM! Leeds, 31st May
24/04/2008
Lotherton Hall is an old country house built in the 1800’s and surrounded by stunning scenery. Its luscious grounds are home to everything from red deer to endangered species of bird. Every now and then Llamas take residence there, though quite where they come from is anyone’s guess. Maybe they make an annual trip from Peru like thousands of Brits do to Benidorm? Anyway, Lotherton’s as good a place as any for a Llama to stay. Beautiful scenery, calm and tranquil - the perfect place for relaxation, a bit of space and “me time”.  The perfect place, it seems, for kings of the Geordie rave Wax:On to kick-off their first ever mini-festival Wax:On LIVE… Bang goes Mr and Mrs Llamas annual holiday.

All in all Wax:On LIVE will host 6 “staggeringly explosive” arenas, each showcasing a different aesthetic of dance. Rather than bore you with the whole line-up (there are over 50 acts and DJs performing) which would take all day to write, and all day to read, we’ll cover the basics.

The first arena will be personally hosted by Wax:On. With it being a Wax:On event they’ve naturally attracted the pick of the bunch; namely Primal Scream. People usually place Primal Scream in the “rock” bracket when describing their sound. Sorry, but there’s more depth to Primal Scream than that. Their music has touched on everything from blues to psychedelica, a dance aesthetic almost always at the core. Have you heard Screamadelica? It epitomises all aspects of the drug experience; getting high and coming down quicker than a pheasant over Sandringham. Other highlights of the Wax:On arena include Erol Alkan (yes, Erol Alkan), Annie Mac (yes, Annie Mac) and Late of The Pier (yes, yes, Late of The Pier).

Wall of Sound take over the second arena with their unique take on the acid house groove. Wall of Sound’s outlook is similar to Primal Scream; the unbridled spirit of “rock n f**king roll” with the spas-dance overindulgence of a blind ape catching bananas. ‘Reverend and The Makers’ and ‘Infadels’ will be two of the bands performing, with DJs including the likes of Unabombers and X-Press 2. Label owners Alvin C and Mark Jones will be kicking the party off in style; naturally!

Of the other arenas ‘Technique’ will be bringing the likes of (drum roll please) Steve Lawler, Derrick May, Stacey Pullen and Steve Bug to proceedings, blending a bubbly broth of dark house and “spellbinding” techno. Hospitality will pay host to drum n bass luminaries including Shy FX, Ed Rush and London Elektricity; Naïve Melody will take over the fifth arena with dancefloor filling electro courtesy of Matthew Herbert, Justus Kohncke, and I-F. And in the sixth arena Adventures in the Beetroot Field will welcome top underground acts including The Count of Monte Cristal and Sinden LIVE, Operator Please, and the awesome Friendly Fires. PHEW!

I don’t give a good god damn if Mr and Mrs Llama don’t like it. They can f**k off back to Peru and take their bags with ‘em!
